Title: Meadowlands planning more afternoon racing this year
Post by: stanetelman on January 03, 2023, 06:21:30 PM
New for 2023 is Sunday matinee racing on Jan. 22 and 29 with a 12:30 p.m. post time.  When asked about Thursday night racing, Meadowlands CEO Jeff Gural had this response, "We lost money every time we ran on Thursdays last year. I am still owed $13 million from when I took over the Meadowlands and do not expect to see that money any time soon. If the horsemen think I am going to continue to take losses on racing they are sadly mistaken."

He keeps crying about how much he is owed. He's up in age. Then sell it. Does he really want to leave that much dept to his family? Is the sportsbook tied to having a race track there? If it is, he's gotten his money back and more.

First off it is  "debt" lmao.

Not sure how being owed money translates into 'debt' for his family.

So, he thinks its a good idea to race during the NFL playoffs as opposed to on Thursday nights? Interesting.

The Sportsbook will be packed during NFL playoffs. He thinks those players might wander over to the racetrack to bet on the races. We know that just doesn't happen.

Yes, we know they are separate markets. We also know, the Sunday market was also very poor before sports betting. You can't say the guys don't try.

I'll definitely go.

I go ~ 2x a month for live racing; in winter its Yonkers 3rd floor or Aqueduct.

The 3rd floor at Yonkers is old school and the winter Aqueduct experience isn't great.

This will be nice.

go for it
have to try something
sundays are huge  for nfl and tbreds
and yes the sports book will be packed so perhaps hope for a little cross over
i would definitely give it a try a few sundays in feb and march once nfl is over , other than tbreds  there is nothing else going on

My recollection is big m had sunday afternoon racing in the first decade of century.  Ill play on sunday afternoon. Limited football on: mostly college hoop and nba. Woodbine nee Mohawk (lol) not racing so may do ok.

He can't sell it, he has a lease. His loss is funding the place. There's no way it's ever going to pay it's own way. Let him bitch, at least theyr'e racing.

They did have sunday afternoon racing years ago but the horsemen hated having to drive back from south jersey after racing  late on saturday nights.  Handle wasn't all that great but that was before Gural took over.

They are lucky if they get paid straight time.

They raced Sundays at the Meadows years ago, sucked, handles were shit, just like the Big M's Sundays. Campbell got hurt on a Sunday, think it was a 15 claimer or N/2 bottom level back then.

The Meadowlands should have raced on Thursday. If they put on a real card, with drivers, & full fields the handle is 2.5 million. The crap they have carded on Thursday is on them & deserves a poor handle.

“The reason I wanted to try a couple of Sundays is I’ve had a lot of customers say things to me about Sunday afternoons where I’ve never really had anyone say anything about Thursday evenings,” said Meadowlands’ chief operating officer/general manager Jason Settlemoir.“ Jeff finally relented and said ‘Okay, try Sunday afternoons,’” said Settlemoir. “Quite honestly, I’ve always wanted to try Sunday afternoons. I've always wanted to see how well we would do against Aqueduct, Gulfstream and Oaklawn.  I think they’ll be better than Thursday evenings."
