Whether you consider the Little Brown Jug the most prestigious race in harness racing today or not is up to everyone's own opinion. But to increase it's purse size to $1 million has to put it under some serious consideration.

Not bad for a county fair track... tmbz1

Maybe the half mile track hating owners and trainers of the better horses will show up now. The Jug is probably the best known race and certainly gets more attendance than any other race in this era. Too many geldings and 2nd tier top horses have been winning it for the past decade or more.

glad to see it
hope to see 3 divisions with 10 horses in it
money cures all ills( ie dont like a1/2 , dont like 2 heatsetc)
bottom line more people attend the jug than all major stake finals combined

Let's hope that someone gets an accurate count at the race itself and not use the attendance of everyone attending the fair! Hopefully pictures and videos confirm the actual number of people!

Is Phil Terry still hanging around the Jug sucking Cock in the back barns?
-
I don't think it will be enough to see any Ray Schnittker entries

Does he have anyone good enough to enter?

regardless of how they count the attendance it will be more people than you will see at any other harness track on any other night

Just saying, you could very well have 750 people there watching the race on a 75k people at the fair.
-
The race is shown live on all ADWs and more. You can see the crowd watching the race. Thousands lining the whole area.

Let us hope some posts the actual # at the race and not the fair total!

It's a small county fair on a Thursday afternoon so the large majority of the 55k people are there to watch the Jug.

Looks like a lot more than 750ppl. watching.
What a pretty nice race in the final.

When I went annually in the years pre-simulcasting - it would be shoulder to shoulder people around the track and grandstand seats would be sold out in April. Announced crowd would be 50,000
Today - barely two deep around the track and a third of the grandstand empty. Announced crowd, 50,000....
hmmmm
I doubt it will ever get back to the previous days due to simulcasting. Still can be a heck of a show. Perhaps the million will be a draw. But I don't see entries increase greatly. With only two or three with a legit chance of winning and being top 2 in the final to see a significant amount of purse money. Many fringe horses will still bypass the multiple heat format to maybe get a share of the Elim purse, and to draw an outside post in the final for minor spoils.

The last few years the crowd has been smaller because of miserable weather and then also the covid year. I am sure we will never get back to the crowds of 1980 where the only room was the roof tops of the all buildings where everyone could see Niatross race. But no place now is like it was back then with simulcasting and a lot of the fan base gone. But it is still a very up close unique venue that draws fans from around the world that every true harness fan should experience at least once.
