After talking to a few people around the barns everyone says owners then caretakers then trainers last. They said a lot of trainers don't bet at all.

If one of my horses had trained well and I thought he had a good shot, I would bet (sometimes quite heavily) and let the driver know (in the paddock) he owned 20% of the bet (some drivers wanted nothing to do with it, however). If the horse won I would usually buy the trainer (and his/her spouse/date) some "special dinners" and make sure the groom got a few Benjamins. Most of the time this would only be at Meadowlands, Yonkers or Roosevelt back from 1971 through 1995 when the handles were huge. At most other tracks I kept my hands in my pockets. I never owned more than 3 horses at a time, and usually just one or two who competed at high-level conditioned trots; only one pacer, which Herve was the dedicated driver for.

As an owner for many years, the only information I asked my trainer was did the horse jog/train good, how is he feeling, et al. I NEVER asked for any information about if we got a shot or not. My trainer would say things like he fits in this class, has a shot, and should be good. With this 'information', I would tread lightly and go to the windows. My trainer only told me this three over the years and all 3 times, the respective horses won and paid between 10-15 dollars on a 2 dollar win ticket. It wasn't worth a potential argument with the trainer if he said bet the horse and the horse raced poorly!

I remember a few years back a NEW horse partner of mine had won some $ at the casino at Scioto so he went out to the betting windows and bet a $100 exacta on our horse. The horse went off in a later race and won with the correct exacta. He went to the window to cash out only to find he never told the teller the later race number so the the ticket was worthless.

Thats why the signs say check all tickets prior to leaving the windows sorry for your partner

Never wager while you are still giddy from a prior hit! You will screw it up somehow for sure! tmbz1

how about the on-air handicappers and track announcers ?

Why are "drivers" not one of the choices?
Monti, especially during the age of $1,200 purses, had the drivers betting much of the $$$$$. And not necessarily on themselves!

I was talking about current times not before the 5%. Back then probably the drivers did bet the most.
