AS HAWTHORNE RETURNS TO ACTION I WONDERED WHAT HAPPENED TO JOHNNY ROCKET ROBERTS
JASON DILLANDER
BRANDON SIMPSON
ALL THE ABOVE HAD TALENT
-
Simpson awaiting federal prison.
-
Roberts was last seen shooting heroin in an alley in Robbins.

J.D. lost his nerve after his last mishap in the bike!

Roberts was last seen shooting heroin in an alley in Robbins.
STOP
GET 9FF THE CRACKPIPE ASSWIPE

All the above had talent.
Thanks, I needed a good laugh.
And if you were serious, I guess we just define "talent" differently.

Clint Galbraith is now 86 years old assuming he is still with us. I know he went from the top of the heap to who knows what? After having some incredible horses what drove him to being irrelevant?
-
Very headstrong man. His out of date homebred and the farm. Mucho cash out-little cash in.
-
Clint Galbraith is now 86 years old assuming he is still with us. I know he went from the top of the heap to who knows what? After having some incredible horses what drove him to being irrelevant?
At one point they were giving horses away because they could not care for all that he homebred. Not sure he is still around but they were dumping horses quick in 2014-2016. so assuming he may have been gone then.
-

Honestly, because he was never great. He sucked and was an arrogant thief. Niatross overcame his connections like no horse in history. Clint trainer/driver, Billy Gill asst. trainer and his wife as the groom. Sire stakes guy who got lucky with two horses. Niatross and Call for Rain....I know I will catch heat from some of you like, wiseowl. I don't care I am right
-
I think Clint's wife's father had all the money to get them started. I heard she got an endowment every year and then then the money ran out.
-
100 percent correct! Great recall Remington.
-
Makes one realize how great Niatross really was.
-
tmbz1 tmbz1 Imagine back then he was trained by Haughton or Holloway and driven by a Campbell or O'donnell?

Who was the big guy that worked for them? Ken Bauer? wasnt he a Chicago guy that worked for clint awhile?
-
I think you are referring to a guy we used to call Maine Hills - huge, red bearded, drank beer like water, big sloppy GF Maybe the name you said was his real name. he was with Clint for a looong time.

No this guy well clean shaved. but about 6'4 or 5. Surprisingly drove on occasion.
-
I see. Vaguely, very vaguely, familiar name.

Does anyone know what happened to Eric Carlson?? He just vanished and I thought he could drive one.

Great question - I liked Eric Carlson

Clint was at stabled Vernon quite a few years. Drove a white caddy. He had some really nice horses.
-

Truly you jest
All the above won lots of races with mid level talent horses . Roberts drove to WIN !!! Dillander did well with trotters . Simpson training driving was more then adequate.
How many wins do you have ???
Have a nice day fetching shopping carts
-
For a very depressing story on Clint google
" Rodney Farms Breeder of Champion Standardbreds"
-
Clint had more than 2 great horses. He may have been a bit miserable but he was a decent horseman. He plain and simply got too big and didnt want to sell his horses for what they were worth for fear than someone would show him up.
-
In the 80s Clint had a Niatross colt who was a non winner of 2 or 3. He sold him for next to nothing and three months later this colt finished 2nd to Jate Lobell in the 2 heat Confederation Cup. All it took was a trainer and vet up to date. It wasn't that hard to show him up
-
Clint had several unbroken 3 and 4 year olds. There were some renegades in the bunch but he did have some come out as 4 yr old maidens and went on to productive careers.
-
Real shame that things happened for the Galbraiths the way they did.
-
Another thing with Clint,. When they Syndicated Niatross after he retried, Clint, Lou Guida and Morty Finder did everything they could to screw Niatross's original owner, Elsie Berger, out of every penny they could.
-

And, for good reason. Almost every racehorse he sold would go up 2-3 classes in a month and win.
-
Clint prided himself with statements about his practically non existent vet bills. Once had nearly 40 horses at Vernon and total vet bill was just over $100.
-

That was probaly more Lou Guida's role than the others. Lou Guida never met a party he wouldnt sue.
-
That was probaly more Lou Guida's role than the others. Lou Guida never met a party he wouldnt sue.
And Morty "The Degenerate" Finder, who wore Gucci suits with torn Black Converse. He used to haunt the 52nd ST. OTB/Restaurant sniffing around the Poulin wiseguy/bookmaker connections looking for a handout.
-

There were two barns you could always rely upon to gobble up 3 year olds coming 4 late in the year as the "castoff, lower echelon horses who got lost in the shuffle" went to Harrisburg or were advertised for sale privately. Clint Galbraith and Billy Haughton.
Also, Billy Popfinger before he returned to Fla. for the winter. Lotsa good raceway stock could be grabbed in those days for 10 -25k in the "fire sales"

There are so many drivers from the 70’s I would like updates. We all pretty much know about drivers that regularly drove at YR, RR and the Big M. But what about the minions from MR, FHLD, Brandy and Liberty Bell? Just to ask about a few…Marvin Maker, Bill Bresnahan, Syl Decample, George Sziklai..he changed his last name years ago. Or anyone else from the Golden Years of harness racing.
-

Szikalai changed his name to Cliff
Syl deceased

There were many, many very good drivers who elected to stay home when the Meadowlands opened. Wanted nothing to do with the big city life.
-
Szikalai changed his name to Cliff

Can't remember a leading driver at any track ( meaning the annual dash winner ), who was more enmeshed in corruption and dumped more races than Billy Bresnahan. Amazing he found the time to win any. He was Herve's "bitch ", I guess you would call it.

Anyone know what became of Mario Marcellino from MR. Once heard he was a NYC cop, if memory serves in addition to racing horses. Red and gold colors.
-
There is still one living in Monticello with that name. His contact info is published online including a phone number. It's not hard to find just search for Mario Marcellino harness
-
You know everybody Fuguzzi. Was there a Cory Garafalo at Meadowlands in the late 80s or am I confusing him with Carl who got popped for drug stuff a few years ago? For reference Mike Loreto was Garafalo's 2nd trainer and Jersey Joe Schwind drove for them most of the time.

not a cop.. mario still around up in Monti.. had a terrible accident that left him a quadriplegic but doing as well as possible under the circumstances .. great guy..loved and respected by many

4 Monticello guys -- mid to late 70s
Bobby Delcampo
John Stadelman Jr.
Gary Matthews
Randy Perry

The only person from MR that Jidge mentioned that I ever heard of is little Randy Perry. Of course he also raced in NYC and I think he is still around. There are so many MR trainers and drivers that have come and gone. One of my favs long ago was Jim Grundy. He was quite successful for a few years at MR before packing up and head west to California. He had a successful career there too. Another MR favorite who I actually made a good buck betting was Gilles Villemure the ex-NHL goalie. He would show up out of nowhere with long shots. I, being a NY Ranger fan, bet him first and second in every exacta he was in. So many times he would come in the money with a limited number of horses. Villemure is 83 years young probably living in the French area of Canada.

Oh no Hate to hear that happened to mario and I know you are right now. I think Mario was a HS teacher. Math. I may be wrong, but that rings a bell. I wish him well if he reads this.

I only remember Carl Garafalo. Bought a horse off him after I trained the horse a trip in 2.02 to a jog cart. Something felt off, so I asked to measure the hopples. He obliged. The right was 2 inches longer than the left. He wasn't quite the YR/RR material I hoped for but did very well in New England

Gary Matthews??? Now that one escapes me. Randy Perry had some decent horses including one I used to race against called Prime Almahurst. Rest of course, I know of. Wow - John Stadleman Jr. Wonder what became of him....

i think Mario was in horse biz shortly after high school as a groom for Sach Werner and eventually worked his way up to a trainer driver.. he was racing in Yonkers by late 70's..
i'm wondering if ur confusing Mario with Joe Ferregina who was a retired NYPD cop.. He may have had similar colors to Mario.. He was also a real nice guy..
-
Could well be. I am just very sure that Mario did something else beyond racing. Thought it was teaching. Pretty sure Mario had a horse named Kildavin for a guy named Athens, a Greek restaurant guy from Waterbury, Ct.

you guys remember Alan Alkes and Paul Appel??
Paul Appel had a horse named Spinning Son that my Mom used to bet because she said I made her head spin

I see Al every year in south Florida. Still a character with many stories
-
Delcampo trained for the Glassers for awhile. He was a top pool player.

Delcampo trained for the Glassers for awhile. He was a top pool player.
I heard that. George Hadges was also. he was known as an east coast hustler.. Plus he owned a really classy upscale billiard hall on Tuckahoe Rd. in Yonkers. George married into money and was loaded with money himself. He did very well and always had some nice "lightswitch" horses including the Open Pacer MeGottaBret.
-
Anyone recall Sid Allen? He owned a restaurant in Jersey, raced a number of horses on the NY circuit.

Carl was a good guy. He was also hooked up with Bobby Bonjournao
-
If you lived in northern nj you knew sid allen’s restaurant. As far as Jack Quinn I always found him impossible to bet. I never knew him but if I bet him he never came close. I gave up on him.

George was heavy ., Very nice guy and good horseman.. His son Roy also
drove in the 60's at Monti but smartly he went on to become a successful veterinarian

Bresnhan's father owned the Freehold dairy in the early seventies when Billy and Bobby got started in the horse business.

how about Tommy Lunchento a Freehold trainer and driver.
-
Incorrect.. Father & Son
Both deceased
I know they are both dead and yes i mistyped I knew they were rekated
Roy used the radium pellet treatment in horses knees. i know he used it in the NYSS horse Curragh for Gerry Hade
He smoked and between the two pretty sure that's where his cancer came from. I think he was in his 50s when he passed.
Used to use a Geiger counter to see if pellets were still live between treatments
-
Luchento’s Restaurant on Route 33 West used to be very good 20+ years ago. I think it was owned by the same family involved at the tracks. It was only 10 minutes from Freehold Raceway.

George was the nicest guy -- always willing to help. At Monti he used Marvin Maker and John Patterson Jr. to drive -- what a weight difference from him. He went to Ohio to race then headed to California with Rick Plano. Raced at Hollywood Park and Los Al for a year then went back east.
-
George Sadowsky may have been a great guy but at MR he was an automatic throw out if he was driving. He was spotting most other drivers close to 100 lbs!! Years ago at a MR Saturday matinee I saw George warming up his horse. When I looked up I saw the horse basically froze and refused to move and got scratched. The following week George put up a different normal weight driver and the horse was just fine. I always said if I was that horse I wouldn’t want to drag that big guy for a mile either.
-
I wonder if Tommy is still alive. The restaurant was his.
Yes Tom is fine.
-
Yes Tom is fine.
Any body remember a very marginal guy at MR years ago named Pasquale Picca. He owned a pizza shop in Putnam Cnty , NY and occasionally raced a horse he owned. talk about a toss out. Half the time he couldn't get a horse to qualify. His whole move was try to leave the gate, often resulting in getting parked. Made the amateurs look like HOFamers.

Sounds like junkyard man, John Lussirado. Nice guy. A bit high strung.

He was there 95 - 2000 ish had a low level good looking horse named Tedy Roosavell camr in, I think from Ohio, always wanted to claim him with Jimmy Taggart at the time, but I think jimmy felt sorry for the guy and din't wanna put him out of business..LOL

Not Herve reading the NIATROSS driver besides Clint
I was positive Clint asked Herve to drive Niatross in the elim. If not, then who? BTW, the 1980 Meadowlands Pace was the richest horserace in history at the time of any kind.
Niatrosss didn't really clear until the half and then toyed with them.
-
Clint’s brother (I think) Don Galbraith drove Niatross in his first start.
-
Clint’s brother (I think) Don Galbraith drove Niatross in his first start.
Consider this schedule for Niatross back then. July 5 - Battle of saratoga - Falls over the hubrail and has a fever.
races 6 days later Meadowlands Pace elimination, July 11... 7 days later jogs to victory in meadowlands Pace, July 18
Three races including falling and being sick in 13 days. A lot different than today, huh?
-
It was his step son Donnie.
-
When he fell over the rail at Saratoga it was the first time he hit him hard with the whip and it spooked him and he jumped sideways.
-
When he fell over the rail at Saratoga it was the first time he hit him hard with the whip and it spooked him and he jumped sideways.
I was there in the paddock, a 17 year old groom. It was a split card. we were racing at night and had to harness up outside tied to trailers and fences until Niatross left the paddock which was like 8pm if i remember. Place was packed for a huge fireworks show. Vets poured all over the horse. I heard even Dr. Churchill looked at him because he was over at the runner's track. Word was his post race temp was 102. I knew a girl named Vickie who rubbed for Clint and she heard that Billy and Marie and of course, Clint all suspected he had a flu all week. Apparently LPG group pressured him to race. And yes, as Clint knew he was about to be passed, he went to the whip and the horse tumbled. Haughton would later say at #/4s he knew he had him because, Niatross was "laboring"
I will never, ever forget that day.
-
There was a guy named Cleo Hughs from Boonville NY he was just like Clint. He had a farm in Boonville and had a ton of horses there. Some were three, four, five years old and never broke. They were all pretty good horses for home breds. They were all named something Harhu I think one was Polyharhu or something like that.
-
He was definitely going to get beat that day. I never knew he was sick that day. He was a great horse and also Call for Rain was a great horse.

There is a video made in 1983 on you tube. Jayne Kennedy, the model hosts. Bout 18 minutes long. She interviews Clint in several different scenes and outfits. he talks openly bout the horse "having a touch of flu"/ Temp was like 102 apparently and red blood cell count was off from what I heard. makes for interesting watching. During the credits Jayne Kennedy is jogging one at a good clip. Hair flying .No helemt

Irony was that Storm Damage, who was runner-up to Niatross in several big races, turned out to be the sire of Call for Rain (Clint's 2nd top horse!)

Remember Ken Iulo. he had some horses who could function. I recall Screen Director K winning with Kenny in lower level conditions at the BigM
I recall vividly the closing night of the summer Roosevelt meet in 1976. In the very last race Ken Iulo won (I think with a NZ horse possibly) and the teletimer malfunctioned and posted a track record time. I also recall that the win price was around 8.40 (funny the things we can see so vividly!)

Nice ! Good anecdote and it is true what you said.

Not sure about the bobby bongiorno angle. It's possible. But yeah, if it's Pat Quaglietta you are talking about he did pass many years ago. If alive he would be quite old. past 90.

Bresnahan fixed a ton of races at freehold with Brennan/Morrill/Jim King/Howard Parker
of course they had this all approved by Cat Manzi-who received a cut

Jack & Jayne lived together until Jack passed. Jayne still trains horses races Northfield, Scioto, Ohio fairs
Believe they met at Monticello mid-late 70s. Jayne arrived from Ohio with trainer Susan Fogt? -- back when Jayne was still driving.

I assumed that, ty. just meant between his sudden departure from YR and RR and the ultimate reality.

I didn't care for Bill Fahy as a horseman/driver and I am not surprised he doesn't miss the business. He didn't seem like he was paying attention when he was in it.
Fug, I always thought he was a little bit arrogant as well.
-
i never liked Fahy as a driver, dont know much about his horsemanship
my memory is fading--did Fahy drive Fake Left or Western Hanover?
my old brain says Fake Left, but i am not sure anymore
Your brain is old! LOL Waples drove Fake Left. McNichol was scheduled to drive Fake Left but got hurt on Jug Day. Fahy drove Western Hanover.

I;m sorry, but Marcel Robillaird was a good man and mentor and well respected.

Anyone know where Steve Smith has been riding?
-
The only person from MR that Jidge mentioned that I ever heard of is little Randy Perry.
[/quot Randy Perry]died about 15 years ago. maybe more.

Steve Smith is still a regular at Freehold. He also makes regular appearances at the Meadowlands and Yonkers. He still looks to be partners with Karen Garland. The few times I had a chance to chat with Steve he seemed to be a good guy.

For one reason or another, Steve is someone I only dealt with on a marginal basis. Good guy, limited talent, tried hard everywhere he raced. Definitely not above playing games too.

Steve is a great guy and a very underestimated trainer. Very sharp

Lots of memories

Last I heard,Carlson got married and went back to the corporate world. I believe that he was a designer or engineer at Ford motor company prior to catching the driving bug.
-
Good for him if he is happy. How do you ever "cleanse" harness racing from your blood once it gets inside?? LOLOL
-
Gerard MacDonald. Young driver, early 80s, NY circuit. Sadly, took his own life, but the circumstances were mysterious.
-
I definitely remember him and that tragedy.
-
steve does very well for himself.. if you are a first time owner he would be the guy to reccomnend.. you will not get hurt
-
Luca D is on FB. I hv chatted with him a few times.

If you can get a new and better career, make more money without injury and health risks, go for it!!

Delcampo trained for the Glassers for awhile. He was a top pool player.
Ah yes. Bobby Del Campo. Played pool in Plainview in Plainview, L.I. He was quite the hustler. At that time I had graduated to 3 cushion billiards.
-
Yeah -- this crew is probably a little before your time -- by the 80s I was already on the west coast.
Do you recall the Redman's chief suck at that time at the Hollywood Park meet? Hint, I"m speaking of the original " Redman". The guy I speak of now races at Sacramento and Aces. I'm quite surprised that Redman and his great pacer have not been mentioned.
-
Jack still trying and driving in Delaware
Bill is at the Meadows
Billy Fahy was a driver when I had horses with Stillings/Salvi. at the Meadows which at the time was a real "Family track". He drove for his father Bob and did well, however, I am of the opinion that he tried to move up way to fast and became a little fish in a big pond.
-
You knew him better than i, obviously, but I found him to be, as my Nana would say, a "funny duck"

Very first time at the track for me and my family -- Monticello. I'm 13. I go down by the rail to watch the post parade -- I'm fascinated. No one around me. Post parade ends -- Bobby Del Campo driving Sforza, turns his horse to score down -- an older guy appears next to me against the rail. As Bobby passes he turns to the guy tells him -- two, six -- guy dashes off. I'm not quite sure what happened -- I go up to the grandstand tell my father -- he bets a $2 Perfecta two, six. Yes $ 2. Of course it comes in and pays $ 76.20. I can't tell you how many times I went down to the rail again -- never heard anything.
-
I used to talk to jimmy Allen over the rail 1975 I was 12 I remember him smoking in the post parade I thought it was cool when he won some major trots with Chiola Hanover
-
Many years ago when Real Cormier was driving at Monticello I too would hang on the rail up the track a bit. On a few occasions Cormier would start talking French to other French speaking guys. They too would walk very quickly towards the grandstand. I can only surmise they were going to hit the windows. Did Cormier always win those races, nope. But maybe he wasn’t supposed to and told these guys? I don’t know. I believe Coco wound up running a kitchen somewhere before passing away. Monticello certainly had their share of characters.

The kitchen was in Pinehurst

80s into 90s, Coco Cormier, Mike Lavalee and a guy named Jean operated a feed delivery truck hay/grain/straw at YR they were the main on track supplier then Red small flatbed type truck Always felt weird to see Coco and Mike doing that rather than competing
-
I think Coco at one time ran the kitchen at Vernon.
