Title: I dont wtch football, so here's some MR trivia
Post by: Fuguzzi on September 10, 2023, 06:10:32 PM
Warren Desantis was a very good race secy throughout the Northeast and a very nice man. His brother R.W. "Dick" Desantis had some good success for years at Monti as a trainer/driver, but that's not all he did. What business did he also own that had something to do with the horses?

Any of you Monticello guys mid-late 70s remember a guy "Coconut" Bob Grove?  Always wore Hawaiian shirts -- he owned a parking lot in the city and would come up to Monti in the summer to gamble.

I know the name but I think I was already gone by then.  I 2nd trained at Monticello in the 70s and Meadowlands when they opened in 76 through 77-78. Stabled next to Mike Gagliardi. Very nice guy, but I was always looking over my shoulder.

Honor Dunkentell was so short and his arms were so long, I hate to say this but his knuckles literally dragged the ground. he raised a brood in the tack rooms at Monti, they used to call the grooms dorms Dunkentell Arms   the Dunk was a great guy, never a harsh word

Anyone recall trainer/driver Fred Heck? His daughter Brenda has been married to Gary Messenger for a long time. Always betting at live MR. My friends dad was a pharmacist who sold legal supplements to Fred. We would drive up to MR in the mornings to deliver them. One day we were there and Fred told us he had a horse named Comet Adios a rollicking C-3 pacer. C-3 at Monticello was like L-3 at Yonkers 😀. Fred liked his long shot’s chances, didn’t they all. Through my friend’s dad bookie I bet the house, $5 win and place. The next day I opened the Daily News and saw the horse won and paid $38 and $12. I collected $125 and now I was a millionaire. The next week I saw my friend’s dad to thank him and asked what was in those supplements? He just smiled at me.  tmbz1 tmbz1

I haven't seen the Biccum name in quite a while. I had a horse at the farm with a trainer Ricky Maher Jr. about fifteen years ago -- I think he said they weren't there anymore.

Rarely has there been any sure things at MR back in the 60s-80s unless you were on the inside of some questionable choreography. However the closest thing to an automatic profit that I recall was the summer of Ben Webster. I don’t recall the year, in the 1970s, or the specific reason he was suspended from either RR or YR. However he found open arms at MR and did he ever take advantage of that situation. I wish I still had his record for those months but “The Whip” had the racing time of his life, as did his betting fans. Does anyone recall that summer and the surrounding situation regarding Benny?

Yes 1973. I do not recall any of the big drivers accused of cheating being found guilty in this case. I know Herve was thrown out for many years until PA let him back in. Thanks for the heads up Fug.

Well herve was rather untarnished by the scandals of the 70s. Herve finally was tossed for good after he plead to a couple misdeamenor race fixing and sports related charges instituted by the WEsrchester DAs office. same scandal that ensnared Danny Kramer, Richard Wojcio, Rene Poulin ( he had others ) too. Yes Herve was finished until a very lenient PA commission and Pocono let him back in.

Yes no one in the 70s really found guilty

Buddy did some federal time but that was for tax evasion

The Facebook site is pretty good. You can tell how much many of the members care about each other and those that have passed.

Ok yes Forest Gerry jr, who never drove - he was a conduit between the drivers and Peter Vario, mobster, who is the son of Paul Vario as profiled in Goodfellas. Coco Cormier and Frank Popfinger caught up in that shit too

let's remember Buddy Gilmour ran over mob money in 1966 by winning a race he was not supposed to, was dragged to a hotel room and beaten up, then lost his license for almost 4 years. Got it back in 1970, but by 73 was in trouble again. And there's more.

I know for a fact, personal experiences, that Buddy loved running over even his own owner's money.

Plenty of room for him in the Hall Of Fame, but not Tony Morgan and his 17,000 plus wins. Right?
