Love being on here and all of the new friends I have made. So let's occupy a slow night with something more fun.
Quite simple - List your 5 all time favorite harness drivers for whatever the reasons. No arguments - this is judgement free fun! You can include an honorable mention.
Here are Fuguzzi's, not necessarily in order
Michel Lachance
Jim Morrill Jr
Bruce Ranger
Herve Filion
Luc Ouellette
2 honorable mentions - Wally Hennessey and Rejean Daigneault
-
Based upon the subject title are you saying that "Coming soon statement by Goshen President Steve Jones in regards to SC M" followed an hour later by "Goshen President Steve Jones Press Release SCM " is needlessly clogging up the board with gossipy BS topics that have little if anything to do with Harness Racing ??
The O.T. sub forum would be a great place for the "As the (SCM) World Turns".
-
John Campbell
Keith Waples
Doug Brown
Ron Pearce
Wally Hennesey

I'll play. These are the ones I liked to bet on the most and some of their horses I loved and had scores with or memories of. All old timers except for my all time favorite ... for obvious reasons if you knew her.
Riina Rekila ... E.L. Titan beating Father Patrick at Hoosier and many other longshot winners
John Chapman ... Governor Skipper and Mr. Sandman who I saw blast out of the gate one time from post 8 and crossed over within about five steps.
Billy Haughton .. Keystone Smartie, Handle With Care, etc etc etc
Del Miller ... Meadow Bright, Tarport Hap and met him at a Ho Jos once in the 70s
Bill Popfinger ... Shirley's Beau and others at prices
Honorable mention
Campbell ... Produced my best overall betting win with longshot Armbro Dazzler in the Sweetheart in the early 80s
-
John Campbell- Because he was a concument professional.
George Brennan - because he drove to win regardless of his own money or the owners.
Chis Page - because he was making an name for himself and was in it to win it.
Josh Sutton - because he only had one speed...
Dave Palone - a methodical driver no matter the mount. true professional always.
AND SCM SUCKS HIS OWN DICK. NO ONE ELSE WILL.

Yes I actually do which is weird because I still can't remember Leo Bauer but I remember that horse. Better with horses names than people I guess.
How do you even remember Mr. Sandman? You had to be real young then.

I was Prolly like 13 because i think he raced 75/76, right? I clearly remember Big Towner This when my family starting owning horses in Jaques Dupuis stable. We owned a horse with Jacques called Homestretch Eve. Ring any bells? Do you remember JM Jupiter? Command Decision? As I said in earlier threads by the time I was 13 all i thought about was harness racing. Well almost all. winkwink
-
Yes I remember all those horses as it was my prime time for learning everything about racing and handicapping. I used to go and watch Governor Skipper and Big Towner when they were in the area all the time. One of my favorite old memories for in person was watching Nickawampus Leroy do his 3 wide sweep the field move to win several times. Breathtaking on a half mile track.

I'm sorry but John Chapman should be eliminated for the most horrendous drive in the history of harness racing on BIG TOWNER in the Monticello OTB classic -- and he won the race.

Was Big Towner trained by Lee Broglio? Remember Nickawampus Don? Momentous with Bobby Rahner?
Now to prove how into it I was at an early age I will dig deep and pull out a name from obscurity - a trainer, I think he was Black - Marion "Dolber" Tolson

It's not a best driver ever contest, and sorry I'm not giving back the money I won betting on him fifty years ago ngc3

Lee Broglio .. Yes
Nickawampus Don .. I don't remember
Momentous .. I think you mean the Fulla Napoleon colt Momentum from that time.
and I vaguely remember a black trainer or driver with that name but as I said before I'm better with horses.

Momentum That's right
-
Ron Marsh - Won many races for me.
James MacDonald - Transformed into a superstar when he went south during COVID.
Bob Farrington - The Red Man was the king of Chicago when I was an impressionable newbie.
Joe Anderson - Came to Chicago and absolutely kicked ass catch driving even before he got all those big name horses to train.
John Campbell - Simply the best.
Honorable mention: Timmy Tetrick, Doug McNair, Ken VanderSchaff (sp?), Bobby Burnett

Sanibel Island and Miss Easy still remain the greatest pacing mares I have ever seen.

Loved watching her race! Hardly ever missed one!

I know that in 1970, when Carmine was laid up in the hospital for a while, Marion was training his horses. Not sure if he drove much, except in qualifiers??

Certainky not advocating racing horses that are unsound, but I remember one race at the M, she had the 6 hole. She looked like she couldn't walk when she hit the track. Steve kept scoring her down hard as if he was trying to "work it out". Then she went out and dominated the boys. ;D
-
His name was Marion Dover Tolson.. As previous poster said in 1970 he was an assistant trainer to Carmine Abbatiello.. He was a tall guy 6"2 and a little over 200lbs.. He started down in Baltimore and came up to NY in 60's.. Very nice guy..

Top horseman. He caught my attention as a kid . I could swear his name was Marion "Dolber" Tolson, but OLDGUY says I am wrong. Can you confirm? Thanks...

ok I apologize. Its DOVER. Yes, a very nice, polite accomplished trainer.

As a side note , Dover wasn't his real name.. It was a nickname as he was born in Dover , Delaware
-
Well That part I knew. It was Marion. I mentioned that in each post. At his size, he struck an imposing figure to me as a kid on the backstretch. Weird, what you remember.

This is a great article about him. The link will bring up a NY Times "Archvie" article, which is a paid service, but you get one "free" article. When the window comes up, just click "continue" and it will take you to the article (which also includes a photo of him and, as a bonus, the RR entries for that evening!!)

Ty I found a different piece in the Times about Black horseman. In those days, 1972, The Times still used the word Negro to refer to them.
