Title: Trying to remember
Post by: Fuguzzi on September 12, 2023, 10:54:32 PM
There was on the grand circuit an openly gay, highly skilled trainer/driver with colors that included light pastels. i think blonde haired, good looking guy. Was his name Gary Baker or something like that?. Can anyone help? Ring any bells?  in the 80s/90s?

There was a Gary Baker, mainly had young horses, I believe his colors were blue and orange -- no idea if he was gay. Gary Lewis also had pastel colors (pinkish and yellow maybe) -- excellent with trotters.

His colors were purple and green if I remember right.
Always had some nice looking girls working for him.

Lewis wrote a chapter in the most recent Care and Training book.

Gary trained Davidia Hanover, who finished runner-up in the Breeders' Crown in 1985 and 1986 (I believe as a 3 year old and 4 year old).

He was meticulous as a trainer (so that fits with his having contributed to the latest Care and Training book a Chapter on the "Role of the Caretaker"), and he really knew how to rig a trotter.

Gary could drive one too.  I remember him winning the Founders Gold Cup at Vernon with Graff Zeplin.

Top horseman! His work with Davidia Hnvr. was HOF material alone.

I recall he and a significant owner, Alan August sued YR and NY for improper handling of a sample after he caught a positive. Cant remember how it turned out. Long time ago
