Post by: Fuguzzi on October 24, 2023, 07:51:57 PM
What do Ray Schnittker and Steve Elliott have in common beyond the obvious like being male trainers and not being in the HOF? ( yet )

I'll just spell it out. Only two trainers in the modern era  (since 1990 - dawn of the age of speed,) to win 2 Meadowlands paces and 1 Hambo.

Note to Goshen - after you give Eddie Lohmeyer his participation trophy, wake up to the people who shoulda been elected 5 years ago

I think Elliot needs to get licensed in NY again before he gets in HOF

He is an all time great and has accomplished much more than I noted.

I am always impressed by the guys who can win the biggest race of them all on both gaits. And there have been only a few.

Billy Haughton in the 10 years previous, btw.

I’m don’t care for the ones that get caught in the process and grab a few suspensions for their brother and hired help along the way. By your theory Bill Robinson is head and shoulders above Elliot

OUCH!  Nah, I was just wondering who in the last 30, 40 years besides Ray, if anyone, won at least 1 Hambo and 1 MP, so I did some research.

Both are good horseman but great chemist. I don’t see any reason to celebrate them. But that is only my opinion

Ray is no saint.

I've known ray since the day he arrived in 86. used to do paddocks for him too. I can't recall a major positive or suspension of significance. Stand up guy, honest and worked his ass off for everything he has. least that's my take.

Ray is straight up cowboy. Little rough around the edges but good horsemanship. Never been caught up in the needle culture. When he has a goo one it is tough to beat. Not like a few others that always seem to have a goo one that can’t hardly be beat

Better make it triplets.

Gelrod won the Meadowlands pace 5X. Twice when he was the trainer and 3X with Robinson listed as the trainer.
Plus he won the Hambo with Giant Victory.  ngc3 ngc3 ngc3

I thought Giant Victory was trained by Per Eriksson

I thought my research was accurate. Did a lot of cross referencing. I only found two trainers, Schnittker and Elliott to have won at least 1 of each and ironically they each won 2 paces and 1 Hambo  If i missed something I apologize.

I fucked up. Trying to stay in the range of 1990 forward - modern speed era, BURGESS DID INDEED! Must respect for that great trainer.

Nancy Takter has done it in the last 4 years.

Good grief. I was scanning lists produced by the USTA of all things and just noticed it skips 5 years on the Hambo page. I dunno why.
