Tuff shit. 60 minutes did a great job of finally doing something about this bs that’s gone on long enough. What this whining trainer doesn’t understand is for every honest trainer in horse racing there are 50 cheating cocksuckers. If any horseman doesn’t like it then don’t watch it. Too bad bitches. It’s about time this shit was brought into the spotlight.

Don’t know of any honest ones. For a list of the dishonest ones check federal prison records the past year as well as every Friday have a look at Usta fines and suspensions. Hope that helps. Just saying for a friend....

I've been in the business for about 20 years. The trainers I had/have are above board. Otherwise, I wouldn't be putting my money and time into this!

Are you my accountant? I am not hurting any by being in the business with an honest trainer. A few others here are jealous of other checkbooks like you are with mine on how they are doing in the business!

I don’t need to be your accountant to know that you are losing your ass because it is impossible to not use drugs on your horses and be competitive. In addition, you don’t know the cheating trainers from the honest ones. You shouldn’t be in the business any longer. I hope it gets better for you.

Not true my man. I just know what I see in front of my face. Like gural said on 60 minutes Sunday, it’s impossible for any horse to improve 2 seconds in 7 days off the claim. You go figure it out from there. Glad to hear your trainer is honest and you’re doing well in the business. I have a few friends who are losing their tail but like you, they can afford and love the business for the fun of it. I say if you’re happy and enjoy the business and can afford to get your ass beat every week, then it’s all good. For me it would be horrible to go down like that every week. But good luck to you my friend.

If you expected this story to be told to educated fans (if there is such a thing, LOL) or people in the industry, then you were just being naive. This story was being told to the masses, the general public, who know nothing about the sport or the industry. With that as a starting point, I don't know if fans or people in the industry could be satisfied. Let's face it, "fixing" this sport and this industry is going to be difficult and take a lot of time. We didn't just get here overnight. It is not going to be overnight to get out of here. I think the states, track owner/operators, racing commissions, and so on have proved they not only couldn't do it, but were inept for the most part.
I don't agree with everything Gural has done, but he's done more than any other single person in this industry to clean it up.

Swelling is the cause of pain and therefore was banned, I think, within one day before a race. I used bute on my horses and myself as a matter of fact as did most horsemen of the period. Bute also had dire consequences on human and horse blood chemistry with continued use. Bute is now a thing of the past

That's fine. I didn't mean bute as much as I meant a normal, typical, legal, commonly found therapeutic medication that trainers are allowed to use. So if a trainer has an overage of a such a medication, does that make him a cheater? Is an honest trainer one who has never had any positive test? I ready an article somewhere once that said in the t-bred business, of the top 100 trainers in North America (at that time), there was not one who never had a positive test and there were only two or three had one positive test. Is that the standard for an honest trainer? Is it OK for me to give a horse to Tony Alagna, but not Ron Burke? Linda Toscano, but not Brett Pelling? Joe Holloway, but not Steve Elliott? Ake Svanstedt, but not Nancy Takter? Even then, when a positive test occurs on one of my horses, who and how are they going to prove what I knew and what I didn't? This is not black and white by any means.
Listen, I would like to see an owner have his name of some list showing he/she bought designer or exotic drugs and gave it to their trainer(s). Show me that and I will be the first person to say they should be thrown out of the sport and business for life.

My brother is a equine drug sales rep for Merck. His two biggest sellers are Bute and Banamine. Anyone who thinks their usage has declined is sadly mistaken.

The recent 60 Minutes feature on doping and safety in horse racing was brought up by more than one attendee. Lazarus was interviewed on camera for the segment, which was 13 minutes long.
Lazarus said that behind the scenes, the interview ran for two hours during which time she pointed out the positive steps the sport has made in safety and medication regulation and praised the many trainers who have been successfully following the rules.
“They didn't choose to report any of that,” she said.
Although HISA/HIWU are not charged, per the law creating them, with doing anything resembling public relations or media relations on behalf of the industry, officials said they do reach out to mainstream media to request corrections when they see a factual inaccuracy that overlaps with their regulation – like the 60 Minutes report referring to betamethasone as a “banned” substance when it is in fact a restricted therapeutic. Lazarus noted she thinks trade media have correctly made the distinction between the two types of violations in the course of their reporting.

You said bute is a thing of the past. It is not. Also, it is not supposed to be used continually. As far as leading to an adverse effect on the blood chemistry, you would have to be using it daily for quite some time. I think the bigger side effect like most NSAIDS is gut related.

Harness racing, in decline for many years certainly wasn't "bouyed" by the 60 minutes feature. While i have little doubt, there are many cheaters in our sport, i've always felt that there are cheaters in every sport. I have not always agreed with Jeff Gural. But i think he is trying to clean up the horrible "optics" we all see about this great sport. His battle to bring harness racing back into the "heyday" of the 60's and 70's might be noble. Getting young new fans will be the toughest part.
