Pocono is CLOSED for another month and they wait 5 months to finalize this? This is a blatant example of racing commissions NOT doing their job. Why was this not finalized in October BEFORE the Breeders Crown and then the TVG races? There is NO excuse for ANY medications to be in a horse's system and the people who are caught probably cannot pronounce the name of the very substance they are putting into their horses! ONLY health care PROFESSIONALS are LICENSED to administer drugs............ Glycopyrrolate (Robinul) is a quaternary ammonium salt which serves as a respiratory enhancing drug.

I figured he was doing something unscrupulous and is deemed too big to fail like General Motors.
-
It’s a pretty potent bleeder
-
ngc3 ngc3 ngc3 And this is all they could get on Burke?
-
I don’t think you realize how many horse bleed through lasix. Big edge. Plus it dries up secretions in the lungs. Much bigger PED the. You realize.
-
So how can only one Burke horse be found to be juiced when he races hundreds of them at various tracks? Who is kidding who?
-
So convenient that he always gets to take his days while he's in Florida and never misses a bit.

Oh I realize just fine perhaps you werent quite picking up on the sarcasm I was laying down.

Burke, cheating P.O.S , always was and always will be.

Weaver is right there with him.

They bleed over lasix cause it’s given 3.5 hours past its peak
90% of it is out of the system in less than 2 hours
Biggest waste of time and $20
But the vets love it… wonder why ?

How many total infractions do you think Ron Burke has since 2008 when he took over? How many postive tests since 2008? How many positives did the old man get before 2008? No one will guess these numbers!

Ron Burke has 101 infractions from Jan 1 2008 till now. I counted 15 positive tests in the timeframe.

Yep for these big trainers with huge stables along with being owners on many of them never seem to get the days during stake season. They get a stay on the positive and it magically it appears in Dec or Jan that they have in deed have a fine and suspension. This is why this sport never will be mainstream, racing boards are feckless, trainers will do anything to gain a edge, and they get away with all of these because their is no fanfare to call it out. No other real sport with being the top athlete, highest paid coach, or GM, or owner would ha e all these infractions and not be pushed out. The con game is real and in harness racing to big to fail as it needs the FBI and years of investigations to catch some of the filthy fucks.

Bob Baffert records from 1979-1980 show 22 drug-related positives. Burke Brigaid from 1986-2023 show 25 drug-related positives. Let's be clear that Baffert has only 1 Lidocaine to Burkes 7 and Baffert has never been caught or accused of having Hypodermic Needles or Drug Paraphernalia like Burke.

And still get trainer of the year..
USTA has enough time to set guidelines for all of the end of the year awards! In an age of stipulations there should atleast be infractions to disqualify a candidate! Hot test and for drivers penalties for kicking or abusing the whip comes to mind!

Exactly--and the system is badly broken and needs to be overhauled promptly. I've said it before--Monopolies are never very good in any business.

was Ronnie Boy at the ohha awards banquet? if so how does that look? a trainer accepting awards while serving a suspension. thats one hell of a look!
-
here's a start and god knows it might even help the perception people have of the sport
a trainer may have one horse entered in a pari-mutuel race , a nw, sires stake, grand circuit, doesn't matter only one horse
first off it eliminates any perception that drivers of horses trained by the same person might be helping each other
secondly it creates more opportunities for other trainers and owners and that's a good thing, maybe trainers like burke and other with huge stables are forced to cut back

I like the idea but what to you do when you want to go buy 10 pacing colts for a sire stake program? You automatically lose 9?
-
why dont the governing bodies require that horseman stable at a facility goverened by the association. they can have 24 hour surveilance. racing horses should be a privelage not a right. if you want to race you sign a waiver to abide by the rules of the governing body. this will never happen because its what needs to happen.

valid point harnessfan
there would be some growing pains if the sport truly wanted to be legit
some owners/trainers would have to adjust,
perhaps some owners give some horses to other trainers either from the beginning or once they qualify and see what they have
the problem currently is we have kicked the can so far down the road that what we see today looks normal with a few trainers controlling 90% of the horses , especially the stake /grand circuit ones
and based on a numbers game the smaller owners/trainers are basically shut out in the current system
-
Yes, unless you use Alagna, Burke, Toscano, Takter, Pellng, Ryder, or Noel Daley you have zero chance in the Grand Circuit. Throw in Ake for the trotters.
-
maybe the groom who peed in the stall is a bleeder ?
-
agreed with your trainer list , in todays climate
it would take a while to readjust the balance
of course the list you provide get all the best yearlings to start with and if they miss a few they likely buy them from the small guy who cant afford to not sell
-
Y’all going to crap yourself when on next week list it says under appeal

I'm no fan of Burke. Unless it's some exotic, designer drug that has no place on the racetrack/farm, I have no problem with a trainer appealing a suspension. There MUST be uniform, universal standard rules that apply everywhere and have reciprocity. If you don't have that, your model is a joke. I also have no problem on a first offense taking the days when it's convenient. Forcing a trainer to take a suspension when he has a horse in a stakes race is not the answer in my mind. Too much potential collateral damage. Second offense, force the trainer to take the days during the meet where the positive occured and have every state honor it. Third offense, immediate suspension. Any penalty is deferred during an appeal, but lengthened if found guilty. Something along these lines.
However, this is going to be very difficult and will cost more than current to inforce. Backstretch and farms. Even if horses are coming from authorized, governed training centers, it's hard to police and govern them. But the industry must.
I admire Gural for everything he's done. However, I don't think he played fair when it came to Burke, and possibly another of his trainers. I want to see the details before I say he was wrong. I don't buy into the race office needs so and so to fill the entry box. I also don't buy into nobody wants to go against so and so because he'll boycott your overnight races. People said the same thing about David Brooks and the market would fall apart if he sold all his horses. People are saying similar things about Howard Taylor. There is no one owner, not even Burke and his partners, who are bigger than the business or the sport. If someone ever does become bigger, then you no longer have a sport of a business.
-
was Ronnie Boy at the ohha awards banquet? if so how does that look? a trainer accepting awards while serving a suspension. thats one hell of a look!
Of course he was there. You can skip through the OHHA Awards Banquet and see him on stage quite a bit.
The industry doesn't care how it looks.
-
The only way it will care how it looks is when it starts costing them money. I think ohiobshould do some out of competition testing. Maybe some barn searches.
-
Gr8 idea! The only thing that the jurisdictions are worried about is who will pay for it!

What good does any of this do when you cant test for what people are using? What you will accomplish is widening the gap between the carless overage of therapeutic meds from small and large stables, all the while the true PED users continue to cash in.
-
You can get money by raising licensing fees. There's plenty of money in the purse pools. There is plenty of money. Maybe the owners just have to pay.
-
It was not long ago, New York State did not allocate enough money to testing and the lab, Cornell University I believe did not test anything. So, when the word got out, they taxed the owners with an entrance fee. So, some owners are funding some of the testing burden.
I also recall around 2011, NY banned steroids. Yet, they did not fund testing. It was over a year before funding was in place for steroid testing. The sharp guys were roiding all along.
Drug testing has always been a cat and mouse game. If the rewards are great enough, there will always be those willing to take the risk.

There is something rotten in the NY State testing IMHO. I cant get over the fact that Lou Pena had 1600+ violations going inside the recommended withdrawal times BUT also had used steroids-which 100% would come up positive at the Meadowlands or any decent laboratory -but yet--no problem in NY . If certain trainers/Vets get "tipped off" which medications are not tested for--or told you can go closer to post time than what everyone else has been told--you would have an unfair advantage. When anabolic steroids were supposedly banned in NY--certain trainers "knew" you could still use them ie it was "going through the box".
IMHO--Maylin the head of this sham--should have been fired long ago after the Lou Pena affairs. I wouldnt trust this phony with a bargepole. NY is a great advertisement --to have drug testing Federally controlled by a single First Class Testing facility---where protocol is tightly controlled.
IMHO---the actions in NY and similar--is one more reason racing has gone downhill.

I expect if you did not fear repercussions you could blow things apart in N Y.

Just because you have a Grand Circuit horse, doesn't mean that you can get a Grand Circuit driver! 11.wp 11.wp
-
Why is it that when a driver gets caught stiffing a horse that he would never be the driver of the year? Yet when a trainer cheats via medication regulations,he is eligible to be the trainer of the year? SMFH

That's what HISA is trying to combat. The cheats are always a step ahead of the regulators. It's been that way since dirt was discovered. The careless overages, regardless of where they come from, will continue to be an issue. At some point there has to be zero tolerance. What that point is, I don't know.

IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME WHERE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS MORE DETRIMENTAL TO THE SPORT THAN THE USE OF PEDS. I AM FAMILIAR WITH AN OWNER THAT DECLARED FEDERAL BANKRUPTCY OVER 30 YEARS AGO AND THE USTA WOULD NOT GRANT A LICENSE. GO FIGURE. FEDERAL BANKRUPTCY IS A TOOL FOR FOLKS TO REBUILD THEIR LIFE AND HOPEFULLY FIX THEIR FINANCIAL CONDITIONS! IT IS A RIGHT OF ALL US CITIZENS!!!! IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE AFTER 30+ YEARS THE OWNER WAS DENIED A USTA LICENSE. NO OTHER ISSUES---VERY SUCCESSFUL IN HER NEW COMPANY.
BUT I SEE SO MANY WITH DRUG RELATED ISSUES THAT GET SUSPENDED FOR 2 WEEKS AND THEN THEY ARE BACK RACING. TRUTHFULLY, THE RACING SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK AS THOSE WHO WERE RECENTLY SENT TO PRISION WILL RACE BEFORE INNOCENT FOLKS WHO HAD A FINANCILA ISSUE OVER 30 YEARS AGO WILL BE ABLE TO RACE. FACT IS THEY WERE TOLD THEY HAD A LIFETIME BAN FOR FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY!
ITS FUNNT YOU CAN DECLARE BANKRUPTCY AND WORK ON WALL STREET OR HAVE ANY EMPLOYMENT THAT REQUIRES LICENSING BUT YOU CANNOT OWN A HORSE!!!!! THIS IS A TRAVESTY.
FOLKS WONDER WHERE AND WHY THIS SPORT IS DISAPPEARING?
ALSO, RECENTLY WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATIONS REGARDING PEDS THAT IS UNDERWAY. RUMOR IS IT WAS INFO FROM ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLKS THAT WERE RECENTLY PROSECUTED. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS IS ONLY A RUMOR AND I CANNOT CONFIRM ITS AUTHENTICITY ALTHOUGH IT IS A RELIABLE SOURCE.
TIME WILL TELL!
-
Counselor your are right on the money.
-
All true
-
Agreed. The current system is very broken.
-
The obvious BLATANT disregard for justice is seen with the PA racing commission waiting months to bring down a suspension PRECISELY when that track is closed, and will reopen as soon as the suspension is lifted! How ridiculous does that make the PA racing commission look to the public?! They cannot be that moronic to realize it will be a GLARING example of corruption and favoritism.
-
Why does the appeal take so long ? Is it the commissions or the lawyers that drag their feet ??
-
PA is the worst of the worst. They should be ashamed of themselves. If I were a national czar or commissioner, that would be the first state that I would take over, take apart, and rebuild from scratch.
-
complaining in here wont accomplish much. or ratting people out on youtube wont either unless you have an amazing following.(scm does not) you need to get a bigger platform. like a 60 minutes or someone famous like nikola jokic. there isnt that many important people in the sport so it flies under the radar. word needs to spread outside of the industry. as for the horseman sticking together we know that cant happen.
-
Lol where was this level of bitching for Joe Holloway and Perfect Sting.
-
DEPENDING ON WHO WINS THE NEW PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND THE TAX LAWS THAT WILL FOLLOW---IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THE BREEDERS MAKE OUT IN THE FUTURE. TOAY, MANY INVESTORS ARE ONLY LOOKING FOR TAX WRITEOFFS----NOT RETURNS. IN FACT THEIR RETURN IS THE TAX LOSS SUCH AS A SECTION 179 THAT ENABLE YOU TO WRITEOFF UP TO $750,000 (EXPENSE) AS WELL AS ACHIEVE DEPRECIATION OVER 36 MONTHS. ( BREEDINGS VS. YEARLING TAX LAWS DIFFER)
IF IN FACT THE SECTION 179 DISAPPEARS I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT MANY HORSE PRICES WILL DROP AND CAUSE ADDITIONAL ISSUES IN THE INDUSTRY.
I DONT REALLY SEE THE POWER IN ANY OF THE FARMS AS THERE WAS IN THE OLD DAYS----NO MORE OF THE POWER FOLKS! MOST PASSED AND FAMILY DID NOT TAKE OVER. LOOK AT THE TRACKS LIKE POMPANO THAT DISAPPEARED DUE TO THE WEALTHY OWNERS PASSING AWAY AND NO FAMILY TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD. I IS ONLY GETTING WORSE.
THE TROUBLING THOUGHT IS THE PED AND POSITIVE DRUG TEST EVERYWHERE. DEPENDING WHO DID IT AND WHERE---THE TRACKS/COMMISSION IS NOT TRULY ENFORCING ANY SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS. A FEW DAYS AND RETURN OF PURSE CHECK. THIS IS A TRAVESTY. THIS INDUSTRY IS FAILING DUE TO LACK OF LEADERSHIP AT THE TOP. THIS IS A PIGGY BANK FOR THE SELECT FEW THAT TAKE IT ALL FOR THEMSELVES. TRUTHFULLY, THE TRAINERS TODAY ARE FEW IN NUMBER COMPARED TO THE OLD DAYS. THE GRND CIRCUIT TRAINERS ARE FEW---THEY RACE ENTRIES AGAINST 2/3 TRAINERS. THIS IS TERRIBLE. WOULD YOU ET AGAINS 5 HORSE ENTRY FOR ONE TRAINER??????????? I WOULD NOT EVEN THOUGH THEY NOW ARE SEPARATE BETTING INTEREST.
GEE, WHERE ARE THE GREAT HORSES AND HORSEMEN FROM THE OLD DAYS????

In 2023 Burke had a total of 5,053 starters. Can you imagine the impact on the tracks if he gets thrown out for all his drugging infractions? The next 2 trainers had totals of approximately 1,750 starts.
-
the horses would go elswhere. sold and what not. they would still be entered.

All tracks would benefit greatly, those horse would divide up to multiple trainers. Instead of one trainer with 5000 starts they would given to multiple trainers which would greatly help entry shortage. There’s not a horse shortage problem, it’s a trainer shortage problem.
-
When are the gonna stop this shit? Bob Baffert got crucified for a heck of a lot less. Burke has far worse positives and far more positives.

Right. Have him stick his finger in a bucket of water and pull it out. He'd be missed as much as the hole that would be left.

Far less? Baffert had 7 horses die in succession under his care in a matter of 6 weeks to two months. Are you kidding me far less... Your fucking insane.

Really? 7 horses? In 6 to 8 weeks? Well, I don't follow the t-bred game, but I know a lot of people in it. If this is accurate, I would think that the headlines would be very clear in reporting this. No vagueness, no innuendo, simply "Baffert barn has 7 horses die in 6 weeks" or "7 horses die in Baffert stable in 8 weeks" -- and while I don't follow the t-bred game, these headlines I wouldn't have missed. So, you made a statement here -- let's see the proof on this. Any links to articles that reported this? Anything on this?
-
2023: Baffert has a history of horses dying under his care. According to the Washington Post, at least 74 horses have died in Baffert’s care in California since 2000. When factoring in the number of races run, Baffert’s horses have died at the highest rate of the 10 trainers who have had the most horse deaths, per the Washington Post's analysis.

You obviously don’t follow any news. This was all mainstream media wanted to talk about when it was happening in 2019

There is no legal ruling in America where you are not allowed time to consider an appeal. I agree that if appeal is dropped there should be serious consequences not this dropping the penalty that most states currently do. Any appeal cost the state commission money

.......and now this new one! Mass. 205 CMR 3.21 (7), 3.29 (1)(a),(g), 2(a). On 11/08/2023 Industrial Labs reported to the Massachusetts Gaming/Racing Division the post race test result of Urine Sample E630127, collected from the horse EVERY MANS DREAM on 10/16/2023. The test revealed the presence of Gabapentin in the urine. Trainer of record Ron Burke was notified and exercised his right to a split sample. The split sample E630127 was forwarded to an independent lab of his choice and on 12/06/2023 the lab report from New York Drug Testing confirmed Gabapentin in the urine. On 01/29/2024 a hearing was conducted virtually and as a result Mr. Burke is hereby issued a full suspension for 45 days beginning 02/01/2024 through 3/16/2024. In addition he is fined the sum of $2,500. The horse EVERY MANS DREAM finished 1st and is disqualified. The purse money won, $37,500.00, is hereby ordered forfeited, returned and redistributed. Purse monies forfeited must be returned within 10 days of ruling. The fine is due within 48 hours of imposition. Mr. Burke has 10 days from date of ruling to appeal this decision in writing to the Massachusetts Racing Division.

From the San Diego Union-Tribune (November 21, 2013)
Seven of Baffert’s horses died of sudden death between Nov. 4, 2011 and March 14, 2013. Five died in training, two in racing. Five died of cardio-pulmonary failure. Arthur said the amount of deaths “is undeniably exceptional,” but the “cases were not atypical sudden deaths associated with racing and training.” He called the cluster of horse deaths in Baffert’s barn, “extremely abnormal,” and later said, “There is something wrong here.”
All seven of Baffert’s horses that died were taking a legal thyroid hormone that was prescribed by a veterinarian at Baffert’s request. Baffert told investigators he’d been using the hormone, Thyro-L, in his horses for over five years. But Arthur said Baffert quit using the medication after the seventh horse perished.
-
Under the HISA rules, Burke would be in real trouble. They have a non negotiable progressive penal system. His next positive would result in tral time. I not going to look it up but, it is feeling like a year. This is what has Williams and Faraldo shitting their pants.
These 30 and 60 day spankings do nothing. Brother Mikey gets the top job as interim chief. What does change is the Vet. needs to sing his Huey Lewis song to his supplier; I want a new Drug.

Absolutely tragic, and while there should be consequences to this -- it wasn't seven horses in 6 to 8 weeks. That said, seven horses in 16 months or so doesn't make it better. I don't buy the 5 years and then all of a sudden story, but even one horse, if preventable, is too much. Thanks for posting this.

I guess it wasn't so mainstream as it wasn't 60 to 8 weeks. 16 months doesn't make it better, but let's not turn into PETA and embellish horrible truths with worse ones.
