Title: If you had one chance to .... What would you do?
Post by: Ilovethisgame on March 07, 2024, 02:05:33 PM
I am new so nice to meet everyone . I have a question and look forward to all responses.   If you were appointed CMO of a major racetrack and was giving one chance to drive new fans and change the face of Harness Racing what would you do?  Or do you really believe the game is dead and why bother trying anything at all?

Thanks so much for your time

You ask a good question thats been the quandary for a business hell bent on destroying itself from the outside in, and the inside out. If you look at the feature draws at TB tracks, such as Gulfstream, Saratoga, Churchill, Fairgrounds, etc. they all create a see and be seen atmosphere that draws people in. Most of the draw at these tracks during the various meet schedules, is as many outside the industry as those that are in.  Why you ask? Mainly because they create a higher end product conducive to a higher end social model. When I say product I am speaking not just the race card, but dining, bar areas, events, (other than the drag shows at Big M).  A case in point to a failed venue performance is exactly the Big M, quite literally outside one of the biggest population demographics on the east coast and they can't draw a packed attendance on Hambletonian day to save themselves. Monmouth Park can pull a bigger attendance. for its summer race finally.

Back at the old M1 Hambletonian days you couldn't even find a seat. jam packed.
I have seen every promotion known to man, some of them worked for a while but ultimately failed.
You can't attract people to a product that is widely known for cheating, especially for decades.

Folks, while I understand the concerns raised about issues like cheating and dishonesty within the racing industry, I'd like to steer our discussion towards a different aspect of the sport. Horse racing is undeniably a visual spectacle, yet our technological setup seems stuck in the past. Unlike many other professional sports that utilize cutting-edge 4K technology and action cameras, horse racing often relies on outdated camera setups that fail to capture the true excitement and energy of the race, in fact it down plays it

Consider this: the current high-angle camera shots do little justice to the fast-paced motion and adrenaline rush that define horse racing. What if we revolutionized our filming approach? Picture cameras mounted on each cart, providing dynamic angles that switch between carts as drivers interact with their horses. This could effectively convey the speed and intensity of the races, elevating the viewing experience to new heights.

As it stands, the static camera angles make it appear as though the horses are barely moving, which fails to capture the exhilaration of witnessing these magnificent animals moving down the track at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour. Those of us who have experienced the thrill of racing firsthand know that it's far more than what these outdated visuals portray.

In today's sports landscape, fan engagement is paramount. For harness racing its treated like a necessary evil

this is just a simple taste but now imagine a camera on every cart and a lead camera off the side of the car following.  The action would be amazing. What major sport does not focus on presentation ? The efforts they spend on visual is what makes the sport .

Now look at footbal from the early years. Who would watch it now  ?

Chris Gooden has been experimenting with cameras/go pros and the video is amazing.  Definitely is something to look into, and he probably would have some ideas.

I did see this, Chris is an innovator for sure.  Actually his video was shot to give a trainer insight or a horse that was hitting the front end at race speed.  Pretty cool stuff as a training and shoeing aid as well.

It's been done a number of times , taped and then shown with driver's view and voice commentary. There's no arguing it would add something to it. Here's your problem: Who's footing the bill? Would the minimal attraction of new fans offset the expense? NOPE
Alot more issues, as discussed over and over on here, than visualization that would have to be addressed to garner any significant new
fans regain lost ones. I appreciate your enthusiasm though. tmbz1

I appreciate the response. Please allow me to elaborate further on my perspective regarding  visual

What I'm advocating for transcends the notion of a single camera following one driver. Such an approach, while perhaps fitting for a bygone era, fails to capture the dynamism and excitement of the sport in its entirety and ignores off the shelf tecnology readily available . Instead, I propose a setup involving multiple cameras affixed to various drivers, seamlessly transitioning between perspectives. Concurrently, a supplementary camera stationed on the truck or car following the horses would enrich the viewing experience and provide fast paced action.

In dissecting the essence of televised sports, we find that the allure lies in the intricacies of capturing various angles and moments, akin to a carefully choreographed symphony. Just as a baseball game is not confined to a single viewpoint, horse racing demands a multifaceted visual narrative to sustain viewer engagement. Case in point- baseball from a static viewpoint throughout the entire game would undoubtedly result in a drastic decline in viewership.

Regarding concerns about cost, we have to acknowledge the seismic shifts in technology over the past decade. What was once considered prohibitively expensive has now become remarkably accessible, with much of the requisite technology readily available on consumer smartphones. A forward-thinking track could conceivably implement such a visual enhancement for a fraction of the cost previously envisioned, thereby ushering in a new era of immersive spectatorship and setting a trend that overpowers food trucks and cross dressers

It is pretty cool, he's done more than the one you're referring to. Personally I enjoy seeing the races from the various angles.
