I hit some good tax numbers in the day. It was after many, many years of losing. My handicapping became good & I held my own.

Mostly just a fan and small time bettor from 1966 to 1977. From 1977 to 2007 I owned part of a few real good ones, a lot of "OK" ones and a few not so good ones. Breeder of record on a few decent ones. Bailed when Illinois racing started to decline so I actually made a profit owning. Back to being a fan and small time gambler since 2007. Lots of fun, few regrets. tmbz1

As an owner won a Late Closing Final at the Meadowlands. 2nd both heats in the Confederation Cup when it was for 3 year olds. As a consultant published a statistical study of the relationship between yearling sales and performance by Sire, Dam etc. My customers included Fred Hertrich the first couple years he started breeding.
And Luc nominated me for poster of the year last year ngc3 ngc3 ngc3

accomplished: got out. as soon as I could after claiming a dozen and having a very good three months. the trainer/driver's wife said to me one night in the winners circle at the track during that third month "that owners were not supposed to make money." took note of that honesty and got the hell out within 3 weeks

What a dumbass for telling you. Most just find out on their own! ngc3

Scooped the entire Pick 3 pool at Freehold (twice) in the 1990s. Not huge scores, per se -- $3,600 and $4,200, respectively -- but still, I took down the whole pool with fairly small wagers. I suspect I am still down about $320K from betting on the jugs for the past 40 years. (Remember folks, it's not gambling, it entertainment!)

This is true from an owner's perspective too. Lost a bunch of $$$$$ but made many friends (including my trainer and his family)! Some things can be more important than $$$--believe it or not!

Agree...I have met many very nice, kind people in the industry. The bad ones may overshadow the good...but there are lots of good people in the industry! tmbz1

Became a fan in 1977 when my friend's dad owned horses in western new york. Bet a lot of races with mixed results and enjoyed watching the races. Have traveled to many tracks in North America and have raced at many too.
Part 1
In 2004, I 'talked my girlfriend' into claiming our 1st horse together.
We claimed a 6-year-old mare Allamerican Fancy (Big Towner-Fancy Nancy-Nihilator) for $ 4800 + tax and title = $ 5121.
2 weeks later, she set her lifetime mark of 1.54.1 last 1/4 mile in 27.4 with a $ 23.80 win ticket. 2 weeks later, she swooped a group from last at the 1/4 pole to opening up 3 at the 5/8 pole. The horse and driver caught a Hall of Famer sleeping at the 1/2-mile pole in the race.
The horse also won her 2nd start of the following year by a nose being on 1 line the final turn too with these payoffs!
$ 2 dollar exacta 9-6 for 699.60
$ 2 dollar trifecta 9-6-1 for 3588.00
$ 2 superfecta 9-6-ALL-ALL for 1135.60
The drivers in this race in the order of finish were Jerry Beach, Justan Mahar, and Terry Mcintyre!
More to follow as people post here.

What a ride. I’m sure I’m in the minority, but got to experience the best harness racing has had to offer. Been in the game as an owner for last 17 years. Wouldn’t trade it for anything

I accomplished a serious drinking and drug problem.
Don't forget anger, as well.

Anger was due to my 4th wife, not harness racing.

Made a lot of good memories with family and friends in the 70's, 80's and 90's at all the racetracks we visited. Made more memories as an owner in the 2000's winning stake races in Ohio and Ky , but loss most all of the family and friends along the way. Enjoyed watching some great races and racehorses of my generation.
