According to a DOT source I spoke with, a few weeks ago the horse bridge over Route 9 underwent extensive damage inspection following the recent earthquake. Freehold will have to close the bridge, since they will be unable to transport horses to the track when repairs begin. Has anyone else heard this?

Are you guys serious out East again with this shit hole . A few weeks ago you guys stated that the only racebook in the country to close was there . Then they continued begging for a taxpayer handout . Why is this place open out there ?? Let the bridge fall apart who cares ???
-
No one said any thing about money and if they get it from some where it is not yours so what is your problem.

Freehold Raceway is an historical landmark. You can't say that about many other tracks.
-
Why stop with the bridge condemning Freehold. Condemn the entire place and build another shopping center.
-
Wasn't that bridge closed temporarily at some point in the past? When they modernized the circle? After the fire when they started reconstruction and did improvements?

Another hateful post. There are people who care about racing at Freehold. Many horsemen and families. Been there for generations and it’s keeping the area green and great to see the horses there rather than another shopping center or housing.

I happen to love going to Freehold.

The Afternoon Delight. Great memories. Maybe they can put up a tent paddock on the the apron where the cars are, or race out of trailers like a fair.
-
i was going to college around 83-86 and would drive there many afternoons
after class
the grandstand building burned down on 04May84, so they erected huge yellow tents where the totes and concession stands sold food and tickets...all before the rebuilt what currently stands there now
those were the days
-
First of all owners of track dont give a crap about the track which is a shame. There tote board still uses bulbs which half are burnt out while racing. The roof inside has been leaking the last 10 years they just put a garbage pail to catch water. Do you think they will fix the over pass so horses can walk over to track. If over pass is hazard why isnt it being fixed before it falls onto highway killing many passengers in cars and creating chaos. The only one who really knows. Is that asshole. Yes asshole Mark Ford in charge of the jersey horseman and dies didly squat Useless scumbag. Eveything is hush hush until the day before track opens and they tell everyone its closed!!!

What a joke that place is . I almost want to buy a plane ticket to see this historic place myself .
-
Then buy a ticket and come see a small historic racetrack that you will most likely like.
Great central location, home to so many racing families, owners and horseman for decades.
If you have never been to freehold, please reserve your comments.

Me and my fellas coming East if they open that place .

It had nothing to do with an earthquake but a regular state inspection last May found issues.
The good news - it's not structurally deficient but has some exposed girders and other stresses that do need repair.
A Freehold Township official tells me they need to do repairs ASAP, but racing is still going forward at this time.

Thanks for the real info smokingjoe!

In the time that the grandstand was being rebuilt after the fire, we continued in the tents. Froze in the winter and suffered from intense heat in summer until the grandstand reopened. I remember one really hot afternoon when the refreshment stands ran out of any kind of liquids and had to leave to get something to drink.
