I been thinking about getting involved with couple of horses being offered up for partnership. Has any in this group had any experience with VIP Racing? What are some of your thoughts about them as a viable alternative to the old way of getting involved in the business?
-
Tried them years ago. Bought in to a NZ horse that got sick here and never raced. You won't be listed in the program. You just pay your % of the bills and get your % of any purse checks.
-
I was involved with them, nothing but inflated bills. Stay away, anytime there is a middleman you get screwed.
-
PYRAMID SCHEME
-
been around for years and the bills are marked up 10-20% plus there 10% management fee. Highly illegal what they do marking up the fees. Never seen anyone make money with them and they have been getting smaller and smaller every yr.
-
Thanks for all your advise!
-
Been with them 15 plus years. Like everything there will be some flaws but it's for the person who wants to be involved in the game and only be invested for smaller %. I had some good ones (2 time Levy winner) and What Stanley Got 175,000 plus winner this year just to name a couple. Also, had some that didn't pay there way. Communication is great they always got back to me when I had questions or concerns. Bills are a little high but if you want to get in for a smaller % I would recommend.
-
Someone asked recently about them. Here are some stats on their current 2YOs. Not sure of the trainer on one of the non starters.
Yes, it's early in the season. Yes, not include residual value.
Yes, doesn't include training bills and stakes payments for 8-11 months.

Typical and terrible results and these trainers make out like bandits with yearlings for 10 months of no expectations and jogging and feeding babies while they lower their times gradually a few times each week.

This has been a tax write off for billionaires since it's inception
-
I was involved with them about 10 years ago. For 1 of the horses that I owned a piece of, I figured the horse had to make over $65,000/year in order to break EVEN.
Double charging, overcharging, and charges for things I never had to pay for before or after that experience with them.
-
SCAM
-
I never looked at any of these. Obviously you have to dig deep and see where and how much the syndicator/management company is taking. Period. If you do find one that is not a pig, know this-----look at how they sell it. If they make it sound like a good investment, diversification, alternative investment/asset class, etc.-----run away. If they sell it as an experience, a less expensive way to get involved and get exposure to the business, they sell it as fun, something you can't or financially don't want to do on your own, and so forth; and you have the money to burn it-----go ahead, have fun!
Aside from Guida, the farms and Wall St., which were very different, the very early days of partnerships had some trainers doing this. The infamous David Rovine brought it to another level. Then ownership groups emerged, some partnered with trainers. Twin Towers was a big one until (some of) those guys were arrested at the Meadowlands and taken out in handcuffs. Maybe for some people, and a few dollars, this works. West Point Thoroughbreds has built an entire company on this, and they sell it the right way. Do they make money? Sure they do. Looks like a lot! LOL. But, to each their own.
-
Eddie, The founding and managing partner in VIP Stables is a good guy. An accountant from North Carolina, and a true student of the game. You have just as much a chance of being part of a good one as you do with any other partnership. Maybe a better chance, as he buys and races more than most. But yes, expenses are high.
Just like most partnerships, the General Partner reduces his expenses and increases his chances with other people's money.

HORSE (Breeding) Sales Price (Sale) (Trainer) Earnings (# of starts)
Good work I'm curious how you got this info. Is this a report than you can generate on Pathway?
I ruined my eyesight in the 80s compiling a similar report for a few years on all yearling sales by stallions with earnings.
-
Just did my own research based on the yearlings that they bought and offered....

Two thoughts:
1) AWESOME job putting this together
2) Don't walk, RUUUUN away from that hot mess
It's a tough game but those numbers are fucking terrible! They should switch to throwing darts at a board to pick the yearling next yr

makes the stable .ca look good
-
I can't speak to VIP or The Stable, but at a certain point, the company's business model is not racing horses --- it's syndicating product and selling shares. If any of these companies sell this as an investment, one, they are potentially violating securities laws (unless they have massive numbers of disclaimers and doing it legally and legit).....and two, even if they are, run away from them ASAP.
These micro-shares, LP deals, whatever, are nothing more than buying an experience, providing some fun/benefits, and giving you some direct exposure to the game, albeit minimal at best. That's all. If you got some money to blow and want the experience, then it works for you. There are some legit players and bad apples, just like in any business.

-
Worst part is when the horse is sold, there is a commission on the sell price despite it being a loss because they claim that the horse was depreciated to 0.
-

AS OF 12/1/23 - DARK MAGIC OFFERING:
DARK MAGIC
Pacing Filly by TALL DARK STRANGER
(Pennsylvania bred)
Pedigree link Video link
We are THRILLED to offer this outstanding daughter of 2020 Horse Of The Year TALL DARK STRANGER!
Our newest purchase is part of TALL DARK STRANGER'S 1st crop of yearlings. On track, he was an ultra-impressive 19 wins in 22 starts, including the Metro and Breeders Crown at a 2 year old, and the Meadowlands Pace, North American Cup, KYSS Final, Bluegrass and Tattersalls at 3. He was named divisional champion at 2, and Horse of The Year at 3!
DARK MAGIC is a sleek looking filly from a great family...her dam is a multiple Grand Circuit stakes winner and $897,021 earner WRANGLER MAGIC, who has already produced 1:50.4 winner FOXHUNT ($100,649 1:50.4).
DARK MAGIC was inspected by and purchased by top trainer Brian Brown - one of the absolute best trainers in the country and comes up with elite level horses year after year - such as this year's undefeated filly GEOCENTRIC ($466,958 1:49.4). Plus, Brian is one of the nicest gentlemen you'll ever meet!
DARK MAGIC is Pennsylvania sired and Kentucky foaled, making her eligible to the sire stakes programs in both states! We'll also target her for as many of the big money Grand Circuit stakes as she shows the ability for!
Both Cory Stratton and Brian Brown were bidding on this one. They didn’t realize it but Brian loves her!
Trainer - Brian Brown
10% shares are $6,750
5% shares are $3,375
2.5% shares are $1,700
1% shares are $700
-
They got $9200.00!
-
The stable.ca is better
Is this good or bad in the marketing aspect of harness racing?
If you HAD to pick 1, which group would it be?
-
I wouldn't...they both seem to have the majority of their horses in Ohio....stabled and racing....and overpay for horses, keep them too long, and overclassify them, for the most part. If 1/2 of 1% of a horse is exciting to you, then have a ball!
-
Randolph Poker, do you think anyone has made a profit in VIP's syndicate. I have read that there's a whole bunch of folks who seemed to have made a profit at a outfit like West Coast Throughbreds.
-
I don’t know the inner workings of West Point....normally the thoroughbreds sell for a lot more as yearlings....
-
I was 1/2 right.

Lou's Starr Authors New Shenandoah Downs Track Record for 2-Year-Olds
WOODSTOCK, VA ---- Daniel Chansky's Lou's Starr authored a new speed record for two-year-olds at Shenandoah Downs Saturday (9-28) when the Sweet Lou colt pacer crossed in 1:53 2/5 under the direction of Fern Paquet Jr. The Scott Warnick trainee has dominated in all three of his Woodstock starts this fall though Saturday's race was the first in wire-to-wire fashion.
In a full field of eight, Lou's Starr came outside of Maker Dance just before the quarter pole, triggered the fraction in :28 3/5 then opened up by five lengths at the half in 56 2/5. The front stepper maintained that cushion second time around, passed the third stanza in 1:24 4/5 and finished seven lengths the best. His prior margins of victory were by eight lengths.

I could not start a business with the knowledge that everyone looses except me as to me its not moral,,,,,,,,,,I wonder if any of these groups are run with interest in fair play and fair bills and for those who win and that number is small but the truth is that your winnings are a small amount of what you should be winning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Purses need to drop big time and reset and yes this is bad for me and many owners but in truth it is the only thing that can save this game as its much uglier than most think,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, People that lived this game and only reason to exist have told me that they could never seen it go this bad for the fans and so good for a few owners that only see green,,,,,,,,,,,,

GOWIZ was Beaver
Lou’s Starr was MILLER

I wouldn't...they both seem to have the majority of their horses in Ohio....stabled and racing....and overpay for horses, keep them too long, and overclassify them, for the most part. If 1/2 of 1% of a horse is exciting to you, then have a ball!
Have you ever kept a yearling catalog and then went back to see how many actually made money from the initial investment and training bills?? Very few, but we all keep buying yearlings. It's a crap shoot. Racing is what it is.
-
Newbies would be wise to avoid yearlings as their first venture....

Big scam. They have horses with Cory Stratton. That’s all you need to know.
-
Since I started this thread, I've been watching the entries/results of the horses actually racing. The last 16 races has seen a total of $44,840. That is about $2800 per race. Does anyone actually know someone who's done really well as a partner in this stable?
-
Keep in mind that is the TOTAL earned by the horse during that time period, not necessarily THEIR share.
The # is essentially meaningless....

Nope. Your horse could with the Hambo and they would jack up the bills enough that you would still lose!

These syndicates have always operated the same way: that is, it's a hell of alot easier to get 100 people to part with a thousand dollars than it is to get one guy to part with 100K. Divide and conquer, create cash flow to keep the machine running and charge a nice fee to run it. Any person with a bit of brains knows this and doesn't care, those that do should try spending 40-50K and taking on all the bills and they may reconsider how they'd like to participate in the sport.
