We always here about the tracks that close like it's doomsday for harness racing.  There are news tracks too.  Sadly Michigan and Illinois have had the wrong leadership at the state level--mostly inept democratic leadership in these states. Pompano was a shame but Florida land is simply too valuable and big money won out. Life goes on.

Was the racing worth wagering on?

Was the racing (horses/drivers) good or bad?

Same as always: subpar. My point was to Luc's comment that Churchill had pulled their signal. Twinspires obviously being Churchill.

let us look at it this way....

Hawthorne is a shit track in a shit neighborhood. Why would anyone want to go there? Maybe to get mugged.

The neighborhood is fine. Plus with hardly anyone there, one is not parking too far from the entrance.

Yes it is a shit track.

The Carey family really screwed the pooch on this whole thing.  When Arlington closed, they had the monopoly on racing in the Chicago area.  Then they started demolition for a casino that they didn't have financing secured for.  What a sad state of affairs for racing in the state of Illinois.

Well you can still bet and watch them on Twinspires and I'll thank you not to call me Jack. ;D

That is two different scenarios. If you bet Hawthorne on Twin Spires, Twin Spires get the money first.

If you are betting a Twin Spires track while at Hawthorne, then Twin Spires gets the money from Hawthorne. ( well sounds like not getting the money)

Same could have been said about Sportsmans. Maywood to the south down 1st Avenue is tough. At least Balmoral is in the middle of nowhere.
As far as casinos, Potowatomi is in a train yard. Harrah's Joliet is in creepy downtown. Grand Vic ditto.
The location of a track is not really important.
Hawthorne screwed the pooch by running out of money to remodel the grandstand into a casino floor.
Hawthorne is running hy an idiot.
The Illinois racing business is on life support.

Years ago, back in the 1980's Hawthorne and Sportsmen's had great cards and people flooded there in droves. Not any more. One place is gone and the other one a shit hole.

Why not just tear the place down and then no parimutuel racing in Illinois except FanDuel. Which is another shit hole.
