Title: John Horne
Post by: Pacer 2 on March 09, 2025, 01:00:41 PM
He is the worst and the ONLY announcer I cant listen to.  In the wrong profession.

He is horrible. For some reason when the regular announcer at a few area tracks isn't there, he's their go to fill in guy. He called at Tioga for a while before being exiled to Vernon where nobody watches.

Roger is undoubtedly one of the best to ever do it! Father time catches everyone

I disagree about Roger being one of the best ever to do it, but that's just my opinion, and I've listened to him for over 50 years. How about the loudest ever to do it with the most rings on his fingers.

Totally agree .  If he's on the mic . I turn it off.  Same as Stabile when he calls Yonkers.   I was a fan of Finger Lakes until they hired him.   He sounds drunk most of the time.  Both shout and it's annoying

For alot of years when Roger was announcing at The Meadows, he was calling the races from inside a studio instead of above the grandstand where most guys do.

Roger is a pompous ass whose skills have declined significantly.
As bad as John Horne is- and he is dreadful- he began his career with no race calling experience, and I hoped against hope he would improve. Just hasn’t happened.

Almost every race he calls ....."around the far turn, their nose to nose and wheel to wheel"........ugh!!!

You forgot, toe to toe, stride for stride.

At least when there was dog racing, a race only lasted 30 seconds - so there was only time to call out numbers with no comments.....LOL 73cv.2

As far as I know, the only dog track in the US still running is Wheeling Downs in West Virginia.

At any track if I made a bet and my horse is not in contention, I'll mute the announcer no matter who it is.

Nothing worse than firing up a track to settle in for a night of gambling and it's some backup and not the regular guy. I remember the last time at Yonkers that Horne filled in (maybe a few years ago) I screamed when I first heard his voice and it literally ruined my evening. Needless to say I lost LOL.

Roger filled in at Northfield recently...honest ly aside from losing his voice a bit he wasn't bad.

As far as the dogs are concerned only West Virginia is running. Two tracks, Wheeling Downs and Tri-State, both owned by Delaware North.  They have about 3 years to go and then the puppies will be all done. Once New England and Florida closed shop, the game was basically over.
As a cautionary tale, the horse racing industry (both harness and flats) should take notice of how an industry lost its focus and public support thus ending the industry.

I actually went to Wheeling Downs for harness racing on a snowy night in 1970.
