I would guess more than not. With the current situation, how long can horsemen survive with no income?
-
Interesting question. I couldn't even fathom a guess. I have no idea what the daily rate is for a top trainer, but with an open going for what, $7800, and the bottom going for $3000-$3200, I don't see a real money making proposition here. While I am sure nobody is getting $100 a day, with the cost of goods and services, I can't see anyone doing very well overall.

ill train your horse for 15 a day. if they race on mon/wed/ or fri. i get 50% of the purse. if they race on tue/wed ill only take 25% and you pay for feed and hay. and you have to tip your groom whe the horse races. which is also me.

jay doesnt tip

Any trainer who would charge an owner to race there has no shame, some are nice or dumb enough to pay but it's slim pickems.
-
if you owned your own. if you had halfway decent stock and a little bit of fuel. someone could crush at that place.
-
I heard the NYSGC is fining Monticello 5k/day every day they cancel.
-
Will the fine be paid from the purse account?

Good for them.
Will the fine be paid from the purse account?
If true, not good.
-
If so they should use that fine money to get rid of some of the beards in NY.
-
Even owning your own, DIY, whatever, I can't see anyone doing very well there.

You are almost as dumb as the trainers that take horses on deals. This is a sport if you want to play it cost $$$. How many Professional sports teams make money? How about boat owners or golf clubs members??? Only the broke ones cry foul
-
I'm dumb I'm willing to bet you're one of those no account know it all bums who hang out in the simulcast room
-
Or maybe one of those "trainers" that rob owners, lucky for me ill never own a horse there

Never robbed an owner in my life. They knew what I charged before their horse came to my barn. And the always has the opportunity to sell or move to a cheaper trainer

Just spoke to Ralph Silvestri Jr. old trainer who confirmed the kid takes deals like the horses he got from Al Annunziata after we busted him out fronting for Fred Bourgault a couple months ago and the owner pulled the horses. And now the grooms are pissed making no money and doing all the work regretting listening to the old man's BS story quitting their jobs in Bullville and Pine Bush. AKA Gaagoots.
-
So aside from so called "deals"-----what are trainers charging for the daily rate at Monticello?
Just curious, how many horses are on the grounds now, 250 to 300?

You also need the cooperation of your driver to make this happen!!

Stan who are you? I know a lot of trainers there who like to take advantage of honest owners, it's disgusting and probably why they don't stick around.

My current trainer didn’t know me from Adam years ago and he took the challenge of breaking my homebred sight unseen too. A very good trainer(s) and better human beings too!

I would love to meet this guy, I might actually buy some horses, who is it?

Can you name 1 industry where there are not any people that will take advantage of the uneducated. These days if someone doesn’t bother to do their research before getting in business with someone they deserve getting fleeced. That goes both ways. I know plenty of trainers that went bankrupt because owners didn’t pay 💰

This future owner would pay everyone but all you guys at Monticello are bums

I’ve only raced at Monticello a few times in NYSS. It is a cheap track I wouldn’t race in overnights there unless I had an owner with a bad horse that needed to race there and couldn’t fit anywhere else. Just like any other C track. If that future owner would have done just a little homework like look At USTA he would have known what he was dealing with.
-
The purse structure there is not a big secret

It has been asked here before and I’m curious. If you really know an owner that got cheated by a Monticello trainer. Please ask them what the daily rate was. And you did say that owner would always pay their bill. So you must know at least one
-
I know many and most use loser trainers and the winners use a form of EPO and everyone is afraid of that blacksmith
-
Using a form of EPO at Monticello is a sure way to go broke. I know it is difficult to test for EPO but of the ones that have been caught none are racing cheap overnight horses
-
probably 80% on deals
-
7 races tomorrow at Monti. Not a single full field. An hour or so away at Pocono, 16 races. all full fields
-
That seems very odd. Maybe horses were sold or shipped to other tracks.
-
What, 45 horses or so entered? People are saying that not everybody had their horses ready to go, but then again who knows. With only 300 horses or so horses on the grounds, I am not surprised. Doesn't look good.
-
Who is honest there?
-
Who is honest there?
I worry more about the drivers trying to cash a ticket instead of trainers “lighting up” horses!!
-
And if you can't get a top 3 driver you're done and most busted trainers can't
-
Where in the owner's or trainer's business model is anyone making money? Every trainer at an "A" track tells me they are breaking even or making a few bucks on their daily rate. I say BS, but I won't argue. There are other line items to make money on. So they break even, whatever, but really make their money on the 5%.....OK. Not at Monticello! LOL. The only reason trainers take horses on deals is because they: a) can't find owners and/or make money the traditional way; b) because they are trying to dig out of a hole; c) because they think they can make a score and do better than the bill; d) it's the only way to make money. If neither is making money, unless you have an unlimited supply of it, you won't be long for the business.

Cheap prick told a “Friend” it would cost him $50 for a ride back to Brooklyn from the Meadowlands. This guy would have offered gas and toll money and he would have picked up the check if they stopped to eat on the drive back. I’m glad he said stick your ride up your ass and he took the train.
