Canada will bend (maybe break)  the one BIG thing is Ontario and Quebec get all their gas and oil from the USA.   Like many if not most other countries, we have been screwed by tariffs for ever.   That is changing fast.  MAGA….

Tariffs hurt every hard working American and Canadian consumer, families and businesses.. educate yourselves about the real facts, not what people are telling you.. nobody wins a trade war, it's a lose-lose outcome for all.. stop the insanity, CanAm is way stronger together.

So you think it is ok for Canada to not only charge us tariffs but also take advantage of their weak dollar to sell products in the US?  The Canadian people should be thrilled if this goes through. When the million bales of hay don’t get sold to the US every year there will be an over supply up there lowering prices for the locals

We have been putting large tariffs on Canada steel, aluminum & lumber for years so (long before 2025) it's not a one way street. These are just a few of tariffs that we have had in place for many years including peanut butter for decades though not sure Canada exports to much peanut butter.

not trying to split hairs here--but Ontario and Quebec get their oil and gas from Alberta--but a large part of the pipelines runs through the US--so Trump can cut them off

Pipelines from Alberta all run South, none go East.

60% of ALL the oil the U.S. imports comes from Canada. While Canada does import oil from the U.S. , mostly for their refineries in Quebec and eastern Ontario, which are designed for WTI, Canada is, by far, the largest exporter of oil to the United States.
The biggest problem for the United States, the oil production in Canada is under provincial power. Ontario, in theory, could cut off the supply, as well as British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, where most of Canada's oil is produced. The United States is the biggest producer of oil in the world. However, the U.S. consumption of oil, far outweighs it's production.

     Sincerely, Silent One

lets be clear, intelligent people in the oil and gas industry in Canada have been pushing for a pipeline through Canada from the west to the eastern seaboards, this would not only allow these commodities to be transported across Canada while staying within Canada but also allow Canada oil and gas to be exported to other countries at a higher price
never happened why,?? left wing snowflake liberals and climate zealots and indigenous folks  would not allow any frogs or bunnies to be upended  or a tree to be cut down so the government would not proceed , well how is that looking now ...good work Justine !!

From the other thread.....

Much ado about nothing, because nobody knows how this is going to work and impact the horse industry, the BC, etc. This is no different than other governmental acts----just like the recent CTA (Corporate Transparency Act, passed, and effective as of Jan. 1, 2024). The law was passed, there were many unknowns, interpretations, etc. (and it even resulted in several lawsuits). Deadlines were extended, and even right up to the day before the last deadline, people still did not know what to do (file or not file, by March 21, 2025).

As far as the tariffs, and how they impact shipping (back and forth), and racing horses here and in Canada, at this point, nobody knows. All what is written here is conjecture, posturing, paranoia, negativity and criticism (which is the norm here in this forum), and the like. While it might be meaningless, tariffs are designed to be disincentive and prevent unfair business practices ("dumping" or illegal subsidies, rebates, etc., primarily given by governments or governmental bodies, agencies, etc.). Do they have other purposes? Absolutely. This is not anywhere close to clear and probably won't be any time soon.

Is this a complex situation and can a wide net catch unintended people and businesses? Abso-friggn-lutely.
