Anymore the question is what tracks dont.  All the tracks that my horses race at either pay them or take 25 dollars from me when they don't make 25 on their cut.
I believe paying the drivers is fair because 80% of them don't make enough to make ends meet. No one works for free nor should they have to. Only a handful of leading drivers at each track make the money. Let's face it, the top drivers get the best horses & therefor make the most money. It's not rocket science.

To use that same logic, they shouldn't work for nothing thus, a start fee per drive, then the amount rewaded for a win should also be adjusted.
Remember,  drivers are independent contractors, not employees being compensate for work.

Strictly a commission job.  Make the sale and get a piece of the sale.  Win the race ( actually finish first through fifth) and get piece of the purse.  Not good enough to finish first through fifth on a fairly consistent basis....... well, the world needs ditch diggers too.   tmbz1

That about sums it up. If you get the job done, you score. If you don't,  nada. Sharing in a 4th or 5th place finish is already generous.

They have to make 2 million in purses to make $100,000. I don`t think very many are doing that!

3 that drive predominantly in Ohio have already passed the 2 million mark. The lucrative sires stakes have yet to begin.

Aaron Merriman    $3,088,268
Daniel Noble            $2,122,913
Ronnie Wrenn Jr.    $2,066,528

AS it is always on here, those who have never own , trained or driven a race horse.  Have a shit load to say about what they know nothing of.
As a owner/trainer I'll gladly paid the $25 bucks to the driver, as I don't always know how good the horse is that day.
Driver may try hard that day but my horse spit the bit and wasn't feeling like racing.  he gets something, right thing to dofor he driver.

USTA list just the top 50. Probably have to pay for more information. Anyway the bottom of the top 50 made 2.8mln. So number 49 a guy like Ricky Macomber JR made 2.9mln making him 5th highest earner at Hoosier. These are based off 2017. So roughly 150k a for your top 50 which is all of North America drivers. A guy like Dan Rawlings at the Meadows last year, 6th among drivers made 1.85m in purses last year. So your slot circuit drivers at worse make 100k being 6th or 7th best driver at the home track. No slots well your probably pulling a second shift in the off season.

Then pay him $25.00 or what ever you want. If he did like you described here, than he earned much more than $25.00, he earned your trust and will get a opportunity to earn much more.
If a contractor demands payment for every effort, ok. But, the rewards for making the winning payday need to be adjusted, too.
