I claimed Coerfurst at 9 and he made over $100,000 3 years in a row. Claimed Elvis T at 7 had him till he was 11 and he made over $200,000. I bought Rival Guy A. at 9 and he won almost 40 races in 3+ years.

And you bought zero older horses that you ate?

Those were the days, Sam. We all know why today is much different. Back then, most of the New Zealand and Ausie imports did not come here until 7- 8 or older. There were many trotters that did not race at 2 or even 3 yrs. old. But did go on from 4 yrs. old with fresh feet and joints. Today's speed and therapies destroy any chance at longevity.

Exporter is right and the only one that makes sense on buying older horses. If you have a older horse that may have a form cycle and not just back class. It's probably because the horse didn't race at 2 or 3. Either not physically ready or due to injury. Probably had the right owners that just didn't Amish or junk the horse for 1,000-1,500. Horses aren't built like there where decades ago and are built for speed. They have to reach max potential at 2 and then 3. The goods ones go to the breeding shed, others to the opens, a few stay grand circuit and the rest go up and down the claiming ladder. If I'm looking to buy some solid claimer that are 8-10 years old. Probably looking for one's that didn't race early in their career.

Thanks for the kind words, Horses First. One other pattern I often see in older horse who race well into their later years, many are off modest breeding. I would imagine being a bit common in pedigree, there is less expected of them at 2 and 3 year olds.
