They save the costs of shipping, lasix, and a paddock with a minimal shot of getting a check. Depending on where they ship from, they save around $250. Brilliant business plan EXCEPT if you scratch from the 8 hole at Freehold, do they automatically get the 8 hole in their next start? Some tracks do this.
