I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BUT POMPANO RACING LONG HAD A REPUTATION OF WHERE THE CHEMIST WOULD FLOCK TO GET THE DRUG SUPPLIES AND RACE A FEW OF THEIR HORSES AND THEN HEAD BACK EAST OR TO CANADA IN THE SPRING FULLY LOADED WITH THE LASTEST EXOTIC DRUGS TO TAKE DOWN ALL OF THE PURSE MONEY AT THE TRACK OF THEIR CHOICE. NOTHING GOOD CAME OUT OF FLORIDA HARNESS RACING EXPECT CHEATERS AND DRUGGIST WHO LEARNED HOW TO PRE-RACE AND HOW MUCH TO GIVE 3 DAYS OUT. THE PRICE OF HAY AND FEED WAS ALWAYS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME WHEREVER YOU GO. JOE RICCI WAS THE ONLY HOPE POMPANO EVER HAD AND, IN MY OPINION, GABE WAS HORRIBLE AND ONE OF THE MAJOR REASONS FOR POMPANO TO GET LEVELLED. ITS CALLED KARMA. WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND!! ONLT DIFFERENCE IS NOW THE CHEATERS HAVE TO PRERACE AND FREEZE THEIR ASSES OFF AND HAVE TO BE A LITTLE MORE CAREFUL BECAUSE THAT TUBE DOESNT BEND AS EASILY IN THE COLD WEATHER.

Please go and ask some trainers who will be staying warm down in South Florida about feed and hay prices compared to up north when they came down here last year.  Also look into shipping bills when gas prices got out of hand.  I saw a big difference as an owner in the bills coming to and leaving South Florida!  Look before you leap on the price of feed between Florida and up north!  FYI, the hay was lower quality than up north too.

Shipping from NJ to South Fl. Averages about $1,000 each way.  Training facility rent 30 to 50% higher. Grain + 25% and hay is out of sight.
The further South one goes to insure a “good” track is for the trainer and not the horses.

I know a very high quality hay farmer from Charlotte, Vt near the Canadian border   He sends 2 semi flatbeds to Fla early Dec. before the weather really kicks in. He says whether you break it out by the bale or ton, he is getting $27 per bale down there.  Ouch!
