Too many people look at style or strength and pigeon-hole a driver. In the prior generation, virtually every top driver could be "easy" on a horse. It may not have been their style, but all the top drivers had good hands, delicate hands, and could finesse a horse if need be, keep them together, baby them, etc. While he wasn't a catch driver, Berndt Lindstedt had one of the best pair of hands, and might have been the best touch and finesse driver in the game. Yes, John Campbell had soft, delicate hands, amazing feel, and could keep a horse together whether they had a soundness issue, a bad mouth, or whatever. Ron Waples too. Sonny Patterson Jr. also. But John Campbell could also be strong and get a lot out of horse if he was lazy, not giving their all, and so on. On the other hand, Mike Lachance was a strong, power driver, could get a lot out of horse, but don't kid yourself, he was versatile and kept plenty of horses going, together, and so forth. Mike was a horseman and knew what to do with a horse. Today's generation I think is a bit different for many reasons.

Easy on horses...Chris Christoforu

sits them on the cones for 7/8ths then mildly asks them for effort when the race is long over

rarely tries to win-doesnt get much easier on horses than that

I find Dunn gets the most without excessive whipping or urging.
Sears was the best.

Although he no longer is driving, Brian Sears was so respectful to his horses. I do not recall seeing him using a whip unless it was a tap to wake his horse up. Dave Miller and John Campbell must also be mentioned as great drivers who wouldn’t abuse a horse.
