Is it time to do away with 2 Year Olds Racing?
« on: July 29, 2020, 08:41:43 PM »
Every year, these babies go faster and faster and faster.  Everyone who’s ever been around horses knows that at 2 years old, these animals are still developing.  They’re bones are still growing, they’re still not fully filled out and gaining weight and strength, but because of the huge amounts of money available to these owners in these Stakes programs, they’re pushed to go.  And most are done for the most part by 4 years old.  Is it time to change?

Are they going faster or are the tracks set up shorter?

the two year old stakes are relied upon by the big breeders.
the breeders need them to race , because they need the turnover.

No, but I would delay the start of races for 2 yr olds, until September.

If you do your research there are 2 studies out there that found TBreds are less likely to suffer life ending injuries at 3 if they raced at 2 . Should we not let kids play sports till college?

I get the the “college” comment was tongue and cheek... however on that note, I don’t think 7-8-9 year olds should be playing tackle football or... I wouldn’t let my 10-11-12 year old throw a curveball !  Kind of on the same line, not developed yet.

There are many and mixed thoughts on racing two year olds. Obviously money is the motivator.

Here is an interesting read about racing 2 year old Thoroughbreds. Of course there are differences with Standardbreds but, interesting nonetheless.
Maybe shorter distances and advance to a mile at the end of the season.
