Mixed Race at Cal Expo
« on: January 29, 2024, 12:06:29 PM »
Last Friday at Cal Expo - six horse field with three trotters and three pacers.  NW of 3 Trot, NW4 Pace- and with Trotters having a Trackmaster rating of under 58. Assigned posts with the three trotters having the inside posts and the three pacers assigned the three outside posts.
Never seen a betting race with mixed gaits before.  I have seen qualifiers - but not betting races mixed. The #1 post trotter was the favorite - finished fourth.  The three pacers ran one, two and three. Thinking the race secretary had to get creative to make a race for these horses?

they do some different things -- they've done the mixed gaits before.... Also will handicap a horse with the 10 hole even if the field is much shorter.

as you said the three pacers ran 1-2-3.... The favorite (trot) was 4th beaten 14 lengths.

I just saw this topic on the website Harness Racing History. Green Mountain had this in the early 70s, as did Georgetown, and one reply said the good trotter Elmsford beat pacers in an A1 race at Yonkers, no mean feat.

oops
it thought from the heading it was a different kind of mix race  based on drivers
men vs woman
black vs white
trans vs straight ( of any kind)

cmon , it is California after all

Sadly, things like that are anything but confined to 'The Land Of Fruits And Nuts'

Sadly the mood around here is very dour because a lot of people who liked Kathy are upset Scott Ehrlich is allowed back. She had several friends who took her side and still say Scott is a misogynistic pig and woman hater. Plus, everyone loved Gary. Oh well, what's old is new again I say.  tmbz1

In 1986, Herve's top trotting mare, Grades Singing, beat a decent, but not top group of pacers at Yonkers. It was a big deal at the time, when harness racing was sort of still on the map.

Follow up:
That may also have been the weekend when Grades Singing went down to Liberty Bell the next night and beat a field of trotters.
