Can't help but think today's dynamic of racing being a financial burden to the tracks as opposed to a revenue generator is the real reason.
There were hundreds of days in the upper 90's before slots, never a cancelation for heat.

SO, IF YOUR ASSESSMENT IS ACCURATE ABOUT SARATOGA'S REASON....FROM HERE ON, IF YONKERS AND HARRAHS RACE TODAY, YOU SHOULD BE COMMENDING THESE 2 TRACKS EVERY CHANCE YOU GET FOR CARING ABOUT HORSE RACING. CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS, LADDIE.

Spermmy, I am in no way advocating animal cruelty. This is what is implied if I don't agree cancelation of races when temps or conditions reach extreems. What I am saying without equivocation is, before slots, racing was never canceled for these conditions.
Now, as a man who has 40 years experience racing NY County Fairs, often for a purse of hundreds of dollars, did they ever cancel? Did your horses suffer? No, prolly because they were properly conditioned and you did everything you could to cool them out and make them as comfortable as possible.
Good to trade thoughts with you as always, Sperm.

UNDERSTOOD. BUT WHAT I AM READING IS YOU THINKING SARATOGA CANCELED TODAY BECAUSE THEY DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT HORSE RACING AND THEY ARE USING THE HEAT AS AN EXCUSE. WHEN IN REALITY IT IS A GOOD WAY TO REMOVE A DAY OF RACING FROM BEING A GENERAL NUISANCE ON THE PLANT.

AND IF THIS IS TRUE, THEN YOU NEED TO START COMMENDING TRACKS LIKE YONKERS AND HARRAHS FOR CARING ABOUT HARNESS RACING (ASSUMING THEY BOTH RACE TODAY)

We are getting closer to the core reasoning to cancel racing in extreme heat conditions. Shippers. When your track has little accommodations for ship- ins (yes I know Saratoga has an active barn area), extreme weather conditions drive the decision.
No help to properly cool out the horse. no place to let him stand but an aluminum trailer with no circulation. To me, many racing opportunities and good purse money is why there is no hesitation to cancel a card.
And, yes. Track management would cancel every card if they could.

TELL YOU ONE THING. I WOULD NOT BE RACING A MILE AND A 1/4 AT YONKERS TODAY IF I OWNED ONE

I don't blame anyone for not wanting to race today. But, at Yonkers, with the NYRA twin bet and France PMU, there may be a greater need to race than not.

Judges at Tioga are giving the horsemen the option of scratching without penalty

Heat INDEX of 110 74zac.1

Not actual temperature! 91zxa.1

Guess these pussies weren't alive in the late 70's when 100 actual temp was common. 11.dt

Nobody ever cancelled any races or cried about it to their momma or made bullshit excuses. 94z.sm

You would think these stupid mother fuckers have never worked on a farm. 11.dt

If you are that fucking fat and can't stand the heat LOSE SOME FUCKING WEIGHT OR GET ANOTHER JOB! 11.dt
