In my area Harold Stead had a big outfit and vanished almost overnight and our king of the claimers for a few years Fred Hoffman fell off the face of the earth in a few years
Freddie the Hog just retired one day. He sure went though the claimers. And yea Stead, I think he was even a good driver in his day?? McMaster went from a huge operation to nothing pretty quick, Nat Varty, James McCall, Bill Robinson went from the best in the business to just a few homebreds, Monte Gelrod.....Joe Stutzman, before he retired wasn't near what he was......but still had the first dollar he ever made. Kevin Davidson used to have a decent size operation, now just races a few. Dave Tingley before he went off his rocker...Harry Poulton, after Matts Scooter and On the Road again never had a whole lots. It's a tough game.
You mentioned the 70's and 80's and a driver who held his own was Brent Davies. Brent loved his strange pussy and then one drunken night and his wife who had enough of his fucking around went down on him and bit the end of his dick off and then after that Davies disappeared.

Money and the wrong people. Though he was too young at the time Anthony Montini knows from words passed down. Back in the late 60's and through the 70's his old man had a hold over many of the drivers and trainers on the OJC as it was known. He also had politics and the law in his back pocket.
