Keeneland cancels spring meet due to coronavirus pandemic

https://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/kentucky/2020/03/16/keeneland-spring-meet-canceled-amid-coronavirus-pandemic/4994915002/

LEXINGTON - Add the Keeneland spring meet to the list of sporting events canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Keeneland’s spring meet is a rite and tradition that touches every aspect of Central Kentucky and beyond, and the decision to cancel racing is agonizing for our staff, our many loyal fans and our horsemen," Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said in a news release announcing the decision. "During the past several weeks, we have exhausted all avenues for safely conducting our spring meet.

"Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have diligently worked with local, state and national partners in health and government to ensure our actions are the most responsible we can take. We all find ourselves in uncharted territory, but nothing is more important to Keeneland than protecting the health and safety of our athletes, stable employees, horsemen, patrons, track employees and the community at large."

Keeneland had previously announced it would open the spring meet on April 2 without fans in the stands and that it was limiting access to the track to only essential employees, owners, trainers, veterinarians, blacksmiths and stable workers. Four security checkpoints will be set up to check the temperature of anyone entering the track, allowing only those with a temperature less than 100.5 degrees and showing no symptoms of COVID-19 to enter.

The Keeneland April sale, previously scheduled for April 7, has been canceled. The track has closed its general office, shop and library to patrons indefinitely. Simulcasting at the Red Mile Racetrack in Lexington has also been closed.

The CDC's recommendation on Sunday that all events of 50 or more people be canceled or postponed for the next eight weeks led to the decision to cancel the meet

Keeneland will continue to stable horses on the grounds but will not accept any more shipments of horses for stabling, effective immediately. Morning training will go on as normal.

"During this time, we all need to take care of each other,” Thomason said. “In light of the cancellation of our Spring Meet, Keeneland will focus its attention and energy on identifying ways in which we can offer support and aid to the Central Kentucky community and horse industry."

Keeneland had been scheduled to to host two Kentucky Derby prep races, the Bluegrass Stakes on April 4, and the Lexington Stakes on April 11.

Meadows suspends racing
March 16, 2020, from The Meadows

Washington, PA — As you know our country, as well as the world, finds itself in an unprecedented set of circumstances attempting to control the spread of coronavirus. Many governmental entities are implementing restrictions on group gatherings in an effort to thwart the spread of the virus in our communities.
To that end the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has issued a mandate: we have no choice but to temporarily suspend all operations at The Meadows including racing. This will go into effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday (March 17).
This is a very fluid situation. Updates will be announced when appropriate.

In accordance with the recommendation of Governor J. B. Pritzker, live racing at Hawthorne Race Course will be halted for a minimum of two weeks.

In an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19, gatherings across the country are being limited. Per Governor Pritzker’s directive, there will be no live racing conducted at Hawthorne through Monday (March 30). At that time further guidance will be given.

From Gabe Prewitt:

The plan at Pompano is to continue racing this week tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Will likely do mandatory payouts in all pools Thursday.  We continue to draw for next week, & the current plan is to continue racing next week as well.  #LongLiveThePomp
