SHOULD DRIVERS BE ALLOWED TO OWN HORSES?
« on: August 13, 2020, 10:57:39 AM »
A friend of mine was going to claim a horse owned by a drivers wife. He was told if you do that you will be blackballed by other drivers-your horses will either get stiffed or get "brutal trips".
Also these horses never seem to get "roughed up"+ never get claimed-ie get every chance every start.

IMHO-drivers/family owning horses is BS and should be banned.

I have no problem with trainers or drivers owning horses.
I do have a problem if they own and aren't listed as owners.

Why would a driver blackball someone because they claimed another drivers horse? Why should they care? You might piss off the trainer you're claiming from but thats part of the business.

Why wouldn't they be listed?

Tony Morgan owned many horses or was partners on many horses on the Chicago circuit back in the day and was never listed as owner...side deals make it a cash type of business for him - officially being listed puts your business on the books

I own or owned a piece of every horse in my barn, and not on deals either. You cant make money on a training bill anymore or 5% for being the trainer. I never had an owner complain that I had a piece of every thing. Never bitched when we had one claimed, smart enough to not try to pull off a scam on any owner. Never stiffed one or parked somebody´s horse cause he someone claimed  from a drivers wife. Tony Morgan and Dave Palone made a living from being silent ¨partners¨ on horses.

What advantage is there for the "real" owners to have a "silent" partner? So they can be responsible for his "share" ?Taxes, vet bills, feed, stakes payments ? All of you are delusional in your pursuit of "cheaters".

Almost every driver i know owns, or has a family member who owns horses. its usually a family affair...older family memebrs own and train/young guns drive. Thats the business.

If you were a "real" owner and your "silent partner" was Tony Morgan in Chicago - there were lots of advantages !$!$!$ - ask Bret Shultz or Jerry Grevengoed or many others..Tony is a terrific driver - an even better horseman and as everyone who knows Chicago harness well Tony made a lot of money racing in Chicago - for himself and for whoever partnered up with him...and the taxes and the bills etc?  Yes the "real owner" is responsible - but Tony was very fair and that was part of the negotiation...
