Race 9 at Cumberland. Favorite breaks, mid pack, on rail, almost goes down, driver falls off the back, horse takes two other horses way to the outside. Ehrlich is in panic mode, yelling that hose is loose on the track. All horses slow down except the 1 who is motoring along the rail, opening up 25 lengths. Loose horse is eventually caught before race finishes. Long inquiry, then declared OFFICIAL!Should have been an obvious no contest
announcer choked.once he starts screaming loose horse loose horse the race has to be a no contest.
I hate when the announcer starts instructing the remaining drivers when there is a mishap. I drove for about 15yrs and you cannot hear the announcer while the race is going on! The only time I ever heard anything was passing the grandstand at some tracks. However what you hear is inaudible with the the horses breathing, the gravel pinging off the bikes and other guys chirping, whistling and grunting. In the lane it all turns into growling and whips shwooshing. If the announcer wants to help he should instruct the patrons on safety measures. Anyone who is driving has to be aware of their own surroundings and keep an eye out for what's ahead. Laying out in the bike restricts vision and distorts perception.
emergency lights, and high decibel speakers,
I'd like to try putting those electric shock dog collars on drivers. Highest settingThat might help
I don't think this incident rose to the level of a "no contest." Every time a horse breaks there is a good chance somebody else will be interfered with...it is just racing. If however there are horses down on the track with a lap to go, or even worse, horse galloping dragging broken equipment coming in the wrong direction, then the race should be immediately halted. Some tracks have those red beacons they turn on during incidents, perhaps there should be a specific color just to warn drivers to pull up immediately. Cause it would suck if you owned a horse who finished first and was driven out only to find out it was an unpaid workout. Or to have the driver stop driving and lose places anticipating a no contest.
