Well now I know I'm wrong. Joe O'bien along with being a great horseman, was a monster prick. Nobody on the backstretch liked him at all. And he liked to be referred to as Mr. O'Brien. I raced the Hollywood Park meet with O'Brien, Vallaro, Farrington, Dennis, and Vladdingham. It was a great meet, with all the big FFA's coming for the big overnight purses. I remember Joe, setting the World Record for pacers with Steady Star who wore everything in the tack shop, even a brush shadow roll, time 1:52 with prompters at the Red Mile. Who broke that record in Northern Ca. The horse was owned by Lloyd Arnold who also owned the track where the record was broken.
SP Park paddock Mid60'sI am a teenager.I am adjusting something on the race bike.Joe (Jigglin Jesus) O'Brien walks near.He stops and picks up the shafts of the race bike and squeezes them together. He never said a word.I was so nervous all I could think about was that this is Mr. O'Brien and he is helping me.What was I adjusting?Gaiting strapWhy was he squeezing the shafts together?
Joe O'Brien winter trained in Shafter, CA.When he would ship east he would bring along a gazillion 5 gallon pails full of something. Each pail weighted a gazillion pounds.Gazillion, now that is big! What was in the gazillion pails? What was it used for?California mud to pack feet
Back in the day most stables kept an up to date equipment card on each horse. Most likly taped to the inside of that horses tack trunk. On the eq card what would 28-56-88 mean? How about 3 5/8 - 50 degrees - level - 5/16" half round?Or maybe 3 1/2 - 55 - degrees - level- 1/2" half round half swedge?Or Murphy/L ?
Warm Breeze with Dick (not Bob) Farrington.Who did Lloyd Arnold (Arnold Cattle Co,) first own horses with. Before Bob Farrington. In the early 60's my father sold a horse to (S )(B ) and Arnold Cattle Co.Joe was known for his horses to wear the whole tack box. When it came time to write the chapter on equipment in Care And Training they knew just who to call on.What did Stead Star not wear, that most pacers do?
Don't have a clue without cheating. Who else owned horses with Bob same time as Lloyd. He was areal good friend from New Philadelphia, Ohio?
Stan Banks
Yes it was Stan Banks that first owned horses with Arnold.
Here's a good one although it isn't in tune with this topic. What is the only Pari-mutuel (sport) that could be past-posted and yet it went on for years and years, had it's Glamour days and in the past few years has fallen into almost extinction.
Didn't ask for first, just at the same time.
Kooter,I think "Old Guy" was correctly answering my question about who owned horses with Arnold before Bob, not your question about Ohio guy with Bob at same time as Arnold.
