Per Day Rate?
« on: July 19, 2023, 03:36:42 PM »
It's been 10 years since I owned a horse that someone else trained. So what is typical per day training rate for an above average trainer on the NY/Pa/NJ circuit?

That is right on target.  The trainer I am with is in the 60-65 range and he is in the 5%of trainers you want to be with.

The greatest variable (crapshoot) of all in owning horses---vet bills.  Many experienced horsemen can do a good part of things that vets can do, minimizing the vet bills to their owners.  Certain work has to be done by the vet.  Just how it is!

It's really in the vicinity of $65. X $35. or $2000. per month plus-plus-plus. Don't forget the vegetables. It is said that several big time owners have perhaps 125 head in training. At $2000. per month Plus-plus-plus, that's perhaps $250,000. per month plus-plus-plus. Well in all probability there's legal work or some other such barter deal and God knows, most of them probably require lots of legal work, that absorbs some of the cost.

In my area you're looking at at least 25K-30K a year to break even with a reputable trainer. If your steeds not making at least that you're most likely losing $$$!

Just curious, where are you located?  At 60/day, breakeven is about 45k-50k give or take (shipping included).  And it is very difficult to stable on-track and make 40k, even at places like Saratoga, buffalo/batavia.  What tracks offer on-track stabling?  Saratoga to Yonkers/Meadowlands is 3+ hours (did that trip with my trainer a few weeks ago)!  Saratoga to Plainridge is 4 hours give or take too!

DelMarVa area...Most tracks within a hour to hour and half away. I try and paddock my own and help out when I can. Try to keep vet bills to minimum as that will inflate the bill drastically!
