1968 Hambletonian
« on: August 17, 2023, 03:48:20 PM »
Mile track at Duquoin   Nevele pride and Stanley Dancer    28.1 pushing the car out of the way from the rail goes wire to wire and nobody pulls ever until the top of the stretch when he is ahead by 9 lengths

28.1  1.00   1.30.4  1.59.2    I understand the era, but a middle half in almost 1.03 and the field lost contact

Just felt like contributing this considering he trotted in a mind boggling 1.56.4 on the relatively "slow" half mile track at Saratoga

Stanley had severe back pain all his life.
If you look close, he is wearing a back brace.
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

John Campbell?
Maybe, but not the one I am thinking of.
Hint,
The one I am thinking of was also in the race with Nevele Pride.
This old man stayed sitting in the bike in the winners circle too.
His crutches were left in the paddock.

Right you are my friend!

What many people don't know about Sanders Russell is that he "found" Hal Tryax (spelling may be off), and bought him for around $1500.  Raced him and sold him to New Zealand interests, and that horse became a key part of the "backbone" for Down Under breeding, becoming the sire of Robin Dundee, Cardigan Bay and so on.
