Handle Up

But is it a victory that without slots --- they would be racing form a third of what the purses are ?
--- Breeder programs would be in the toilet !
                                                   --- Forget a Million dollar Jug !

Sounds like Biden Talk --- hey inflation didn't go up as much -- Build Back Better is working  ;D

And you say the sport is not dead ?  ngc3 ngc3 ngc3

A 1/3 of the purse money??  Try closer to 1/5 to 1/10 the purse money!!

How much the handle be up/down without the ‘bridge jumpers’?

All opinions welcome!

This report has nothing to get excited about for owners, participants or fans. Race days are down. Average amount bet per race is down. Costs of ownership is way up. Track attendance not reported because it is near non-existent. I don’t have any reason to be disrespectful to opposite opinions but if you think this is a good report think again. If you look at these numbers for any other business type stockholders or private owners would be looking to bail out.

Do you think "handle is down" would be better news?

It's meaningless either way. We lost our fan base a generation ago. You could have nude female drivers and it's still not coming back.

Nude female drivers now that’s something I’m surprised John Manzi didn’t come up with at Monticello. Then again if this nude driving colony comes from the paddocks I’ve been in I think we should pass on this promotion.

why in this discussion do people keep saying " but without the slot money harness racing is dead" but we do have the slot money so that is a non issue, once again it was their payment to be allowed to operate casinos at the racetracks and they have done very well by that arrangement

also please accept the glory days of live attendance being strong is never going to happen, the best you can hope for and the way the sport should be marketed is to hype the big races and make them social events that people want to attend, people play poker and black jack on their phone/computer, why is horse racing any different
the real challenge is getting younger people to be aware and have some sense of harness racing so they bet , who cares if they ever come to the track

it is actually a positive that people can bet from home and not have to drive to the track , are folks likely to bet more if they can sit at home and bet rather than spending time and money commuting to the track in miserable November or December etc weather or not bothering to go at all

The weather never bothered them in the past when there was a quality product that offered value and harness racing was embedded in their psyche. In fact the highest single attendance night in history was at RR on a random December evening. I guess the people that talk about the slot revenue incessantly are really saying "what happens when it's gone"

There were races at Pocono yesterday where the handle was frightfully low. A 5th of what it was 35 years ago when I was grooming for Arnold Teat and Greg Wasiluck was leading driver- hardly "GloryDays", but people came out.

agreed fuguzzi , weather never bothered any of us back then but that was because thee was fuck all else to do
no computers, no cell phones , no internet  and you got about 5 channels on the tv
its different now, most people that go to the track today are bored with all the time between races, better they sit at home and bet and multi task
i dont like it either but it is what it is

Dear Mr Jug: I was a Fan-Owner since 56 years ago. Before you say it I know I’m a dinosaur in this age of betting from smart phones and iPads. But the #1 reason I loved harness racing was the excitement of the live races. I loved the crowds and all the characters at the NY tracks. I loved the smell of the animals and their trainers warming them up. (no offense Fug 😀) What smelled better near the rail was a hyped up horse taking a big dump while never stopping his jog. I mean can you do that? How about all those huge nights at Roosevelt Raceway? What was better than a Saturday summer night at Monticello Raceway with a 8:45 P.M. starting time so all the hotel workers and religious Jewish people could make the Daily Double? I know young people reading this will think I’m nuts but for me these were the best of times. Sitting at a computer or cell phone to bet is not even on my radar.

considering the way the economy is heading, i would say “yes”, racing is still in a pretty favorable spot.
