Meadowlands begging for stakes money again
« on: December 28, 2023, 05:28:21 PM »
While The Meadowlands is pleased to host the 2024 Breeders Crown, the cost of the “Crown” will come at a high cost to a Meadowlands purse account that is already stretched to the limit. We have absolutely no intention of using any profits from our highly profitable sportsbook.

The Meadowlands remains reliant on pari-mutuel handle as the primary source of revenue to purses, a virtually unique situation in these days of large casino subsidies. The Meadowlands receives a total of a $6 million grant from the state of New Jersey, money is legislated to be used for overnight purses only and may not be used to cover the cost of stakes.

By comparison, Yonkers purses are bolstered by more than $50 million and the PA tracks receive over $100 million in casino ancillary revenue for purses annually, although those tracks race many more dates than the Meadowlands.

The Meadowlands runs mostly 2 nights a week, averages approximately $3 million dollars in handle each night, but still needs money.

In this light, the generosity of our stakes sponsors takes on an even greater importance.

From the perspective of the connections of many competing horses, the Breeders Crown being held at The Meadowlands accommodates operating from their home base as opposed to shipping/stabling in Canada or the midwest, resulting in a significant reduction in costs to those participating.

Considering that financial aspect, and the convenience and comfort for both the human and equine participants, the support via sponsorship of those competing in the 2024 Breeders Crown at The Meadowlands is necessary and expected.

The Meadowlands annually spends many times the amount that the highly subsidized regional tracks spend on open Grand Circuit stakes each year.

Been meaning to do it but this post reminded me. Called up the calendar of race dates for M[1] for 2024. 88 days 'ALL' year!! Roughly 7.3 days a MONTH.[roughly once every four days].Mecca my ass. Just another track. And yes the article points out that there 'IS' a $6m  subsidy. Not all generated from handle as erroneously implied by some on here.

$68,181 per card. At 14 races per card it would be $4,870 per race. More than most of these tracks will be racing for when the plug is pulled, and they are actually racing for purses created solely by handle.

If you factor in that money isn't used for Stakes races, it would be more than that $4.870 per race for overnights.

So if the Sports Book profits are not going to be used for the horse racing then why the F did they need the sports book in the first damn place?

sorry jason and jeff
i am a supporter of the big m and strongly believes it must be the showcase  for harness racing to thrive
but you cant completely decouple your sports book and harness racing just when it is convenient for your benefit

in some ways that sports book is your casino and is tied to the location of harness racing, therefore should be used to support the very reason the sports book exists(harness racing)

however i will ask  where is the hambletonian society who runs and benefits from these races and what financial support do they offer
