I don’t think they change it all, which leads them to avoid carding longer distance races, eg 400 yards, as they wouldn’t have enough of a straightaway. A ludicrous meet with short fields, but the quarterhorse meet license holder can’t miss a season while a new track is being built.
There is no winter stabling at Red Mile. They put about 200 loads of sand on top of the SBred surface. Then will take it back off afterwards. Costs them a small fortune to race the 1/4’horses there but they would have lost the casino license if they didn’t have a meet last year and again this year
I see yesterday they ran a quarter claimer, going 250 yards for $10,000. What is really impressive is the purse structure at Oaklawn Park. 10claimers going short for $33,000.Never win 1 other than a maiden or claimer, going long for $130,000.They also extended their meet from the customary early January - early April to, Nov-May. And it just keeps getting better.
