The Meadows/Pocono Downs Comparative times
« on: June 06, 2024, 07:03:06 AM »
Given the current track surfaces and configurations, what are the comparative times for the Meadows and Pocono Downs? i.e. I realize this is not a perfect science, but there must be some comparative data that has been compile in the past year which says what the difference is?? So if a horse goes 1:53 at the Meadows, will he go faster or slower at Pocono, and by how much?

We’ve been at the Meadows for that last 30 plus yrs. It’s probably a sec n a half slower the PCDs. That’s always been the man in reds opinion too

There used to be charts in the programs that attempted to "normalize" all of the tracks so that the handicappers could try and estimate a translation for shippers; while I don't think it had a lot of science behind it, I gave a fairly good estimate.  Thank you both.  Thus a 1:53 mile at the Meadows, if run in identical conditions etc. might be more like 1:51.2 or 151.3 at Pocono!

Don’t shoot the messenger, but according to the Trackmaster speed ratings numbers you see in their programs, they equate a rating of 100 (on a track running with a 0 variant) to be:
148:2 at Pocono and 148:4 at The Meadows.
So they rate Pocono 2/5 second faster.

Where are you finding those ratings (times)? I've asked Trackmaster multiple times and they always state they only rate horses not racetracks.

It’s not published.  You have to take a line in the program for a race at the track in question.
Take final time of that horse, look at the TM rating for that race for that horse, and then adjust by the variant located after the driver and medication (L).
Whatever number you come up with for that time, see what a rating of 100 will equate in time.

Example:  Sat 6/8- race 1 Meadows, #3 Maloucious.
He got a TM rating of 84 based on his time of 151:2 on a -1 variant track.
(If possible, try to find a 0 variant track to calculate the figure).
-1 means the track was 1/5 second faster than normal.
So 151:2 becomes 151:3 to make the variant 0.
100-84 = 16 or 3 1/5 second
Subtract 3 1/5 second from 151:3 and the track is rated 148:2

It would be much easier if there was a way to upload a page from a race program, lol.

But you forgot to factor in

The temperature
The wind direction on the straightaways
Who was driving ( an amateur or a pro)
The age of the horse
If it was less than his 4th start off a qualifier
How long the horse was parked out
If his last qtr was as fast as the top-rated race of the day
How much the horse improved from his 8th start back
If the horse had only 4 starts after more than a 3-month layoff

ALL FACTORS IN DETERMINING THE TM RATING

Anyone with a guess in how Northfield now compares to these 2 places after the track was redone last summer ?

Hi Cory.  I’d say 2 seconds slower now.
