Cumberland, ME — Walter Case Jr., the 12th-ranked driver on the all-time dash wins list, added six victories to his lifetime total on Friday (July 5) at Cumberland Raceway, bringing him to 11,395.

Case started his six-pack by taking both $15,986 divisions of the Maine Sire Stakes for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings.

He captured the first division with Massive Speed, using a two-hole trip to grab the lead in mid-stretch and get the son of Dude’s The Man a new 2:01.4 race record over pacesetter Ridgecrest Dan (John Nason) and Dude’s Wanted Man (Heath Campbell-Valerie Grondin). Trained by Marc Tardif and owned by Leighton Property, Massive Speed was bred by Laurie Harding and paid $2.40 to win.

Like him or not, he was a super-talented driver. Incredible talent. Period. Rate him in every category that you would rate a driver in. He proved he could drive with anyone, anywhere. Due to his demons he just couldn't do it for any reasonable period of time. My perspective is that Walter is not a bad guy who did bad things. Walter was a good guy who has a disease. Addiction. The disease drove him to some very bad places where he did some very bad things. That's not an excuse. Not at all. You pay the price for your actions. You bear the consequences of your actions. He has. He continues to do so. I wish for him the strength, the courage, and the desire, to stay clean and sober one day at a time.

In his day NOBODY could wake up a horse like Walter! I always thought he had a zapper in his boot but make no mistake about pure talent!

As someone who lives in Maine and has spoken with Casey many times, he's still got the "instinct" for the game. He is of course, limited to where he can drive. But his numbers here in Maine are steady and he's still fun to watch.

i watch him from time to time now and that boot is still active. people say he is kicking horses. thats pretty disingenuous. he isnt field goal kicking a horse. he is dropping his foot from the stirrup to the horses hock to scare them. very effective.  most drivers do it from time to time.
i remember at northfield he would get fined every race. stein came up with a contraption where bungy chords would help him keep the feet in the stirrups.

Racing horses is a privilege and not a right. Where is the line in the sand that determines whether you can race or not? Apparently, attempted murder of a human being is on the side of the line that says you can race.

Who's streakin' down the backstretch at Northfield on any nag that wears a halter?
Who's gonna win or try like hell losin'? Everyone knows it's Walter!
And Walter has bloodshot eyes, that comes from the drinks he buys,
And Walter has pills to try and fly so high, he'll so high,he'll so high, he'll fly sooo hiigghhhhh.
