so what?

$5k claimers go in 48 and change at The Red Mile

why does everyone "stare at the clock" in claiming races?

it means absolutely nothing

I wager t-breds from time to time and have no clue what "good" times consist of.  Don't even factor that into my handicapping.  People are amazed by fast times and I am intrigued to an extent, but it's not everything.

Back in the 70's and 80's, speed generally dictated what class you were going to race in!

For example, when I grew up watching Buffalo/Batavia, the feature went about 2:00 and the 3 claimers went about 2:07 give or take!  jumping up to the next class could be a tall order and your best time was a lot slower than the class you were going to.  It didn't matter if it was claiming races or condition races.

That was 45-50 years ago

the antiquated mentality of harness racing is outdated-times get folks excited but they mean little

if times are so important, such a key measuring stick--then why dont they report them in 1/100ths of a second like the tbreds do?

final times and final quarters are completely over analyzed and over rated--people should watch the race instead of staring at the clock
