X-Y Chromosome - Meadowlands - late 1980's
« on: August 05, 2024, 12:26:09 PM »
Anyone remember the name of the mare late 1980's Andy Miller had her, Open / Stakes class? Then one year they found out the XY deal and elevated testosterone. USTA reclassified as a horse and would up like a $40k claimer.

Martha Maxine.  Trained by Erv.  Andy drove.  It was fifteen years ago not thirty five.  Interesting that the original owners were Erv, Alagna, and Brittany.

The horse died on the track after breaking stride in a claiming race

Also interesting that Moreau was one of his trainers his last year of racing when he was passed around from stable to stable and possibly the trainer of record when he went down.

Seems?  Is reading a problem?  The article I posted says he died on the track in 2012.  He certainly wasn't 25 to 30 years old and racing since the 80s  ngc3

I thought it was Alagna that had the x and Y chromosomes problem.

Yes, she was claimed for $30,000 and. fell and died during the race. Richard Moreau was the trainer on record. and he'd had her for three starts... The new owners had to accept the $30,000 loss and are on record as the last owners.
Silvain Filion. was the driver..
The date was June 23rd  2012.

poor Martha Maxine...definite ly suspcious ending.

she started the early summer by turning back the top ffa mares like Southwind Tempo in fast times but she wasnt able to duplicate those kind of miles against open competition and then strangely faded down the class ladder. Who were the original trainers...im sure they were gassing her up and that stopped when she went against the males...rip

Not sure if this is different between T-Breds and Harness Horses.. but:

In 2013, California implemented a rule requiring the claim to be declared null if a horse dies or is placed on the veterinarian’s list after a race (which would happen automatically if the horse was pulled up and vanned off, or might happen as a result of lameness detected after the race was complete). In its first month, 19 out of 229 claims on the California circuit were voided as a result of the new rule.

Reaction to the rule at the time was mixed; according to the Daily Racing Form’s reporting, some trainers told officials they were more confident in claiming horses as a result, while others believed the voided claim rule could allow owners to unfairly wiggle out of a transaction.

California remains in the minority as far as voiding claims for unsoundness or even death. New York, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and Maryland will also void claims for specific reasons related to soundness (some with exceptions not granting a claim void to horses suffering from epistaxis). Other states, including major racing jurisdictions Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, Indiana, New Mexico and New Jersey, make no provision for owners who claim a horse that dies on track, much less one exiting the race with a limp.
