Saturday night observations and thoughts:1.) Chantilly was the most electrifying performance of the night. She probably is the best 2yo filly in North American right now, and may be the best 2yo. Very well built for a 2yo filly.
Chantilly beat a weak Ontario sire stakes group last night with literally not one in that race who looks like they would be competitive outside of the sire stakes program. A nice filly to be sure, but until she faces real competition like Papi Grad, Westwinds, Ascendance, Cowgirl Hanover, and some of the Burke monsters suggest that you cool it with the superlatives.
and we will be back to normal i am sure in the very near future,,,,,,,,,,,,
My favorite team in sports to watch is the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS AND STEPH CURRY and the reason is simple as i know i will see a great and classy show,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Now yesterdays show was awesome as it started from race one and they raced and it was fun to watch and the heavy rains the night prior i am sure helped,,,,,,,,,,,,Ken Middleton showed up and did a great job and the interviews were good but the key was the racing and it was good even with a bad outcome for me and to me a hidden star was JODY JAMIESON as his drive was a ten in the OSS GOLD with a perfect remove when Henry was going way to slow and he did not need much room or a perfect stretch drive and he put on a show for the fans and this was a rare happening at WEG and even RANDY WAPLES WAS trying to find hidden prices with his picks and that to me was his first showing that the game was not a stupid chalk show and the only dark spot was CHAD rozema as he was pure crap in my opinion but overall it was a STEPH CURRY type show and we will be back to normal i am sure in the very near future,,,,,,,,,,,,
PAP ,,,,,TREVOR drove real poor as he thought it was a monday night and he could go the famous 29 quarter with no driver knowing it and truth is in most cases the useless drivers and judges would not notice but Middleton would mention the soft second quarter steal as he is one of the few who loves the game,,,,,,
Middleton, who is a breeder and owner--often mentions fractions and is flat out wrong many timeshe thinks slowing down fractions is a major advantage to the leader--when indeed all that does(many times) is turn the last quarter into a sprint and that brings the others into the race. Closers can outsprint the leader if the race is turned into a sprint., whereas stepping on the gas can eliminate the backfield quickly. Randy mentions this often and he is correct. Not saying that was the case in that particular race last night, but watch and listen to Middleton's assumption that the leader got away with a cheap quarter or half--they get beat often. I speak from watching every Mohawk race every night all year. Ken should know better but he hasnt learned his lesson because he puts his presumptions into his race call often. Randy has perfectly explained this multiple times. Not saying the cheap/soft fraction gets them beat all the time of course, but the drivers are better off trying to bottom them out as opposed to turning it into a sprint. The master at this was Tom Harmer with Falcon Seelster. He would often bottom them out, mathematically eliminate the entire field by flooring it as opposed to allowing the others into the race.In last nights race--i thought it was plain and simple--Jody forced Trevor into making another move too early costing Trevor the race.of course this is just my opinion as a gambler having never sat behind one.
A second quarter "breather " is overrated alot.. the great horses have 3 big moves in them per race. The good ones 2. If you are hellbent on leaving the gate.. put them in the dust. The great Falcon Steelster held the track record in Delaware for many years.
another grand master of this was Moiseyev, he rarely allowed the race to be turned into a sprint, i loved the way he drove.
turning back the hands of time about 45 years or so....whoever drove My Bill Forwood understood perfectly. he would come down from YR/RR and on sunday nights, when Liberty Bell raced their open/invitational , the race was over at the half--he bottomed them out rather easily and the others never had a shotMy Bill Forwood would often be kicked out by Liberty Bell-yes that actually did that back then-then MBF would have to go back to NY.i think it was a Patterson that handled MBF-but my memory isnt what it used to beMBF was one of my favorite horses-i often would watch the races on channel 9 WOR TV on saturday nights with Stan Bergstein and Spencer Ross--MBF could compete with with FFA types-but would win by open lenghts at Liberty Bell
