Meadowlands losing money on racing
« on: September 19, 2024, 11:01:47 PM »
Jeff Gural said it again according to the Daily Racing Form.

The Meadowlands is owned by Jeff Gural, a real-estate developer, casino owner, and horse owner. On Thursday morning, Gural said that the Meadowlands would consider running additional dates because of the Freehold announcement.

“I think we could, assuming we get their portion of the subsidy,” Gural said via email. “But we lose a lot of money on racing, so [I would] need to analyze it.”

They should run some afternoon cards.

Settlemoir brags about their handle all the time but the majority of it comes off track or from ADW's which they only get around 3% from. Other than a handful of days, their racing product stinks, and they need to card 3 or 4 amateur races to fill the cards. Adding another day with Freehold type horses would only cheapen the product more.

With the high cost of stabling in NJ, recruiting more owners and trainers to race there is extremely difficult. Racing a afternoon card sounds like it may be a good move but, going up against all the Thoroughbred tracks for a meaningful share is not wise.

Very few tracks, if any in  America make money. Gural bought the meadowlands with the spec that he could eventually build a casino. He got his sports book which is hugely profitable. I'm curious how much he makes with one to offset his supposed losses at the track. With no track, no sportsbook. Losses can be very deceiving. He built a very nice facility but constant complaining is getting boring.

Always hate it when a millionaire like him keeps complaining how he's losing money. He acts like the savior for saving The Meadowlands but the real reason he did it was in hopes of having a casino there.

The reason they are losing money is the racing product sucks. Amateur races and lots of low level claimers.. They don't even have an invitational or open on Saturday nights for 30 or 40 grand. Moving to afternoons would drop their handle even more competing against the big thoroughbred tracks. Gulfstream,  Churchill, Aqueduct/ Saratoga and Santa anita/ delmar all race during the day.

I don't count other people's money, so I don't a you know what who complains and who doesn't. But, I will say this, Gural said from day one he wanted a casino. It was no secret. That said, he is supposed to want a casino. Anyone who came in----although he was the only one who stepped up and who would get approved----wants a casino. He's a capitalist. I don't begrudge him for wanting a casino. I admire him for wanting a casino and I would support him getting one.

When the state approved VLT/slots OUTSIDE AC, the casinos got together, along with the state, and paid the tracks NOT to install VLT/slots. That is not on the table now because casinos have not been approved outside AC. However, after they are up and down, around every border of NJ.....shame on NJ if they don't approve casinos outside AC.

How many casinos do you think can be supported and successful by the public? AC isn't letting go, live with it. Too much invested by major players. Nowhere do you mention your plan to improve the product called harness racing making it desirable to the general public. Specifically under 40 crowd. There's a good reason why though, it can't be. So again your last paragraph hangs financial responsibility on others in the form of welfare. More welfare. To support a dead and abusive industry that refuses to improve and police itself.

he stumbled into that one

admittedly he had no idea the sportsbook would generate so much revenue--and he didnt push for it

FanDuel pushed and received it joining Gural because they needed a racetrack couple with--Monmouth already coupled with someone else-William Hill or Caesars i vaguely recall

it was a good thing for NJ and racing...he gets a chunk from the sportsbook to over ride the losses associated with racing--techically the sportsbook saved M1

A Jew boy complaining about money; that is something that will never cease to occur.  This mother fucking Jew boy should shut the fuck up already and try putting on a quality product Friday and Saturday nights instead of shitty amateur races and cheap claimers.  Fuck you Jew bastard!!!

Why not stop by M1 and say it like that in person. Or just another case of Plop balls.

The casinos paying the track to NOT have VLT/slots is not a subsidy.....it's a business transaction. Call it bribe if you like. Call it whatever you want. If you are so down on the sport and the industry, go fill out an application at Home Depot.

Personally, having been in this sport/industry my entire adult life.....I would rather see Gural own a track and a casino, and not a casino company own a track and a casino. Look at what the Rooney Family did at YR once they got the casino. Great purses. Horrible, deplorable facility (the racetrack side of the facility).
