If I recall it was put forward by a group of judges who claim that more starts lead to more injuries and that this leaves horses unfit for their retirement.  This should go over like a lead balloon.

idiotic suggestion. Maybe restrict how fast they can go.

It's a great and enduring tradition of harness racing that any effort to make life safer for horses is labelled "idiotic".

Limit starts on 2 yr olds! Beter yet make 3 yr olds the soonest you can start to race. Then you'll see sounder older horses.

I agree with limiting starts for 2-year-olds, but not being to start racing until you're 3 would never fly and plenty of owners would leave the game because they can't get back their investment.

I see Art Stafford Jr was able to drive his trotter Yale in a Delaware Standardbred Development race this week and is in again next week but has no other drives. Is it because it's considered a stake race where they've been paying fees along the way?

usta /acgo do some real work and catch the juicers who make horses go faster than they are capable

That would make sense regarding Stafford. Also I see Lare is gone at Dover as well.

Kirby's Ace:

You're right about Kevin Lare being gone because last week he was still listed as trainer on Primo Maschio. He's in an early non-wagering race tonight and Walter Callahan is listed as trainer. I know his son Shea was suspended for 6 months last year, it's been close to a year since and he's nowhere to be found.

Hasn't been a good year for the Lare's, their father John died earlier this year and Primo Maschio just lost for the 2nd straight week, guess the Lare magic has worn off!

And no more than 3 times in a week unless the driver is over 250 lbs, then 2 times in a week.

Lare may not be listed as trainer but he’s still training them horses. Walter and Jaimie just are listed on the program. It’s ridiculous

More posturing by the USTA. HISA just held a major roundtable/meeting at the Breeders Cup and the topic was racehorse safety. They covered both from the sport/business perspective, and relative to public perception. Then they expanded the conversations. HISA has already had more than a hand in getting tracks to delay or cancel racing, shut down a turf course, etc.---and they've been successful in doing it, even though they don't have the enforcement authority to directly do it. That's a success.

The USTA can recommend, propose, even mandate, all they want. I am still waiting to see what authority they actually have. Like we've seen before, they are inserting themselves into issues where they were uninvited, and they have no authority. Sounds like a lot of noise to me. I think you will see more state horsemen's associations begin to act autonomously, support HISA, and begin to operate differently.

If this proposal ever goes anywhere----watch what happens when people start calling for limiting the # of starts for 2yo's. Now that will be entertaining to watch, LOL.
