Regardless of your personal opinion of Pete Hegseth he did earn 2 bronze stars during his service in live combat, you have to respect that.

The bronze star I have a little family experience with. My late grandfather earned a bronze star on Okinawa in ww2. He belonged to the 77th division statue of liberty division 307th battalion. His unit suffered heavy casualties, and he was disabled for life and collected a military pension until the day he died for injuries suffered in that battle.

At his funeral he received full military honors including a Marine honor guard, 21-gun salute. They set up a tent and chairs for the family.
